Position Overview The general role of the Field Technician II – Fiber Optics is to string and maintain fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines. This position requires proficiency with new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations to include telephone poles, underground services, and conduit. The Field Technician II is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces. This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working in heights and confined spaces for this position. The Field Technician II will report to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily out of their assigned location. What You'll Do Safely Perform work in communications spaces Qualify to work safely in energized spaces Participate in work requiring pole climbing when necessary Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set) Recognize general safety hazards and electrical-specific hazards such as missing and or degraded parts and hardware Perform work from an elevated position in the bucket truck Assist when needed to remove old hardware from poles and install new Provide safety spotting and roadway flagging support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification Manage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections Perform minor field repairs on equipment Perform cable stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing Stay up to date with Industry Standard coding for fiber optics Proficiently work with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc. Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables Other Duties This job posting is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties, or responsibilities that are required for this position. What You'll Bring 2-4 years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferred Ability to identify independent colors and learn color codes Valid Driver’s License is required Experience with the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferred Small equipment experience preferred (i.e. forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.) Flagger Certification preferred Must be comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spaces Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck Ability to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices Possess verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism Compute basic math calculations and take measurements Ability to read and execute network drawings and splicing diagrams Familiar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and Visio Working Conditions Walk / use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls / reach with hands and arms / climb ladders and stairs / crawl / kneel Climb poles; carry, set-up and extend ladders weighing up to 65 pounds, as well as work with confidence on ladders and utility poles at heights of up to 60 feet in the air to perform tasks in communications spaces Work indoors, outdoors, and underground in various weather conditions Able to walk long distances Able to lift up to 65 pounds without assistance Additional Eligibility Qualifications This position requires the completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
