Description
Association for New Canadians is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to the provision of settlement and integration services for immigrants and refugees.
Job Title: Community Connections Officer
Location: Gander , NL
Position Type: 1 full-time position until March 31, 2027, with possibility of extension pending budget availability and satisfactory performance
Closing date: Until filled
Reporting to the Regional Settlement Coordinator, the Community Connections Officer is primarily responsible for, but not limited to, planning, organizing and facilitating community-based programs, activities and volunteer-led projects to provide newcomers with the opportunity to engage with the local community .
Roles and Responsibilities:
Identify , maintain , and build community partnerships to support newcomers and their families as they settle and integrate into the local community
Deliver the Canada Connects and Community Connections Program
In collaboration with the Regional Settlement Coordinator, recruit , train, and manage volunteers involved in programming in their respective regions
In collaboration with the Regional Settlement Coordinator, deliver orientation and professional development sessions for volunteers in their respective regions
Identity funding opportunities and assist in preparing proposals to mark key events (e.g., Canada Day, Multiculturalism Day/Week, Black History Month, etc.)
Attend, organize, and deliver social, cultural, recreational and community events to support newcomers' and their families’ community integration
Provide guidance and support to newcomer children and youth attending school
Implement developed strategies for supports to newcomer children experiencing transitional issues adjusting to life in Canada
Provide youth and young adults with guidance on managing their educational transition plan
Facilitate the delivery of various ESL-focused school activities, as required or necessary
Remain abreast of current volunteer resources, trends, needs, changes, and service gaps
Ensure timely entry of program and statistical data into NewOrg to ensure funder compliance
Participate in staff meetings, committees, boards, working groups, conferences and professional learning, as required or directed
Ensure program activities are delivered in a manner consistent with a trauma informed approach
Provide support and assistance to the Regional Settlement Coordinator on the following, as necessary:
Conduct needs assessments with children and youth and develop strategies for support
Deliver newcomer orientations to, and link families to resources within, the NLESD/NLFSD system
Collaborate with other employees, teachers, school administrators, volunteers, and stakeholders to help identify and resolve any settlement-integration issues
Promote and support the Private Sponsorship Program, as required or necessary
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences , Social Work, or Humanities with a minimum of three years’ relevant experience or any combination of equivalent experience and education
Ability to effectively engage with a variety of stakeholders, including volunteers
Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication (both written and verbal) skills
Demonstrated relationship-building and community connections skills
Possess cultural humility in working with a diverse client and employee group
Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work in a fast-paced environment
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to speak a second language an asset
Experience working with volunteers will be an asset
Experience working in the non-profit sector will be an asset
Conditions of Employment:
Legal authorization to work in Canada
Flexible to work outside of core hours (Monday-Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm)
Valid class 5 NL driver’s license and daily access to a reliable vehicle is required
Some travel required
Position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record Screening and Vulnerable Sector Check from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary
