Savaria employs 2,450 valued associates globally and has 11+ manufacturing facilities to reach markets in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. This position will cover Washington DC, Virgina and Maryland. Office is located in Hunts Valley, MD. Key Responsibilities of an Elevator Mechanic Elevator mechanics typically handle a variety of tasks centered on the lifecycle of an elevator, from installation to routine maintenance and emergency repairs. They work closely with other construction professionals to ensure that all safety standards and building codes are met. Their key responsibilities include: Installing new elevators, including assembling components like cables, control systems, and doors. Performing routine inspections and maintenance to ensure equipment operates reliably and safely. Diagnosing and repairing faults in elevator systems which may involve mechanical, electrical, or electronic issues. Modernizing and upgrading older elevator systems to meet current safety standards and technological advancements. Responding to emergency breakdowns and resolving issues promptly to minimize downtime. Tasks and Duties An elevator mechanic's daily activities are varied, depending on whether they are installing new systems, conducting routine checks, or called upon for emergency repairs. Typical duties include: Consulting blueprints and manufacturer instructions to correctly install new elevator systems. Testing newly installed equipment to ensure proper operation and compliance with safety regulations. Conducting regular maintenance, such as lubricating moving parts and replacing worn components. Keeping detailed records of maintenance work, system performance, and repairs. Communicating effectively with clients, building managers, and team members regarding the status of the elevator systems. Education and Certification Requirements To become an elevator mechanic, one typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by technical training in the field. The most common path into the profession includes: Completing an apprenticeship program, which combines on-the-job training with classroom instruction. These programs are often sponsored by unions or industry associations and can last four to five years. Gaining certification or licensure, which is required in many states and jurisdictions. Certification typically involves passing an examination that tests knowledge of local codes, safety regulations, and elevator technologies. Continuing education to keep up with technological advancements and changes in safety standards and codes. This career not only requires technical skills but also good problem-solving abilities and attention to detail. Elevator mechanics must be prepared to work in various settings, at heights, and often in confined spaces. Savaria provides equal employment opportunities and consideration to all qualified employees and applicants, including disabled individuals and veterans. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation, and training.
