The Opportunity
Are you ready to make a difference on the water? BC Ferries is looking to connect with experienced marine engineering professionals who share our commitment to safety, service, and community.
We’re currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for future opportunities within our engineering operations team. If you hold a valid Transport Canada Third Class Motor Certificate of Competency (CoC) or higher — or an equivalent CoC from a country recognized under a reciprocal agreement with Transport Canada (Australia, Belgium, Brunei Darussalam, France, Georgia, Ireland, Jamaica, Norway, Philippines, UK, or Ukraine) AND you are legally entitled to work in Canada — we invite you to apply for future opportunities with us.
The Role
As a member of our shipboard crew, roles and responsibilities will vary depending on the position and the vessel. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
Carrying out pre-sailing routine; starting-up main engines and/or Engine Room machinery; completing shipboard checks; and shutting down engines and machinery at the end-of-day.
Conducting watchkeeping duties including monitoring pressure levels, temperature levels, and condition of all equipment; maintaining fuel, lube oil, air and water levels; taking samples; handling chemicals; cleaning related filters; and checking all plumbing and electrical systems throughout the vessel.
Observing and recording information in Engine Room logs and daily workbook; completing inspection check-off lists, maintenance logs, battery logs and safety equipment inventory.
Performing routine maintenance on all deck, engine room, catering machinery, and equipment; troubleshooting and repairing mechanical breakdowns; and assisting with the overhaul of major components.
Overseeing and assisting in the transfer of fuel, lube oil, and waste oil; taking soundings.
Assisting in the annual refit; test-running emergency generator, fire sprinkler, bilge and ballast pumps; ensuring submersible bilge pump and compartment valves are working; servicing emergency escape breathing gear; controlling stores and inventory; and training Assistant Engineers.
Performing occasional tasks including servicing sewage system and purifiers; testing fuel injectors; and draining and cleaning injector cooling tanks.
