Position Summary The Area Coordinator’s (AC) role is to create a sense of community within the residence halls and amongst the campus community by valuing, supporting, challenging and empowering students to grow and develop personally and through their relationships with others in accordance with the Salem Academy & College mission. Essential Duties and Responsibilities I. Staff Supervision Responsibilities A. Resident Assistant (RA)/Area Coordinator Staff: 1. Supervise approximately 10-12 paraprofessional staff members 2. Conduct Fall and Spring semester RA/AC training 3. Facilitate monthly in-service training as needed 4. Lead weekly staff meetings 5. Coordinate individual weekly “one-on-one” meetings 6. Approve and track RA/AC programming with end-of-semester summary 7. Assist with health and safety inspections 8. Participate in RA recruitment and selection process in the Spring 9. Develop and revise job descriptions and RA/AC manual 10. Evaluate RAs/ACs 11. Coordinate RA/AC on-call schedule II. Administrative Responsibilities A. Coordinate the administrative, management, personnel and facilities functions of residence halls B. Manage residence hall budget in conjunction with the Business Office C. Regularly assess effectiveness of programs hosted by the department D. Prepare anticipated report on goals and end-of-year report on goals achieved by the department E. Work 30 hours per week in Residence Life office during business hours, providing professional office management assistance and administrative support for Student Affairs programs and services such as supporting students’ basic needs F. Participate in on-call rotation for emergency incident response for the entire campus including commuter and Fleer student populations G. Serve as a member of the Early Alert team in absence of the Executive Director of Residential Life, to identify, track and develop plans for support for student academic persistence H. Residence Life staff member 1. Attend weekly professional Residence Life staff meetings 2. Attend Student Affairs divisional staff meetings 3. Attend weekly “one-on-one” supervisory meetings with the Executive Director of Residence Life I. Housing Assignments 1. Assist the Executive Director of Residential Life with the room selection process 2. Manage room changes according to the mediation process 3. Maintain and update records of changes in room and residency status 4. Communicate housing updates weekly to the Executive Director of Residential Life J. Fall and Spring Opening/Closing and Breaks 1. Prepare halls for opening at beginning of year including creating move-in packets 2. Track students on campus over breaks and extended stays 3. Ensure halls are empty at designated times 4. Perform building walkthroughs once a week and during opening/closing/breaks 5. Prepare end-of-semester billing information for closing fines 6. Track keys and conduct end-of-year key audits III. Developmental and Educational Programming A. Provide training to paraprofessional staff around diversity, inclusion and social justice B. Provide staff training around topics related to leadership, development and student life issues C. Oversee coordination of educational programs in the residence halls and across the campus community in support of the mission of the Academy & College D. Work closely with the Executive Director of Residential Life to develop a residential curriculum of annual programs that complements the learning outcomes goals in the academic curriculum and addresses the student’s basic developmental needs by population IV. Individual Student Responsibilities A. Maintain a high level of student contact, availability and support B. Communicate regularly with students (and as appropriate parents) regarding housing and personal needs C. Manage interpersonal student issues 1. Provide conflict mediation and informal counseling for student issues 2. Refer to professional staff and campus resources as necessary 3. Mediate issues related to roommate agreements D. Consistently and effectively address and work to resolve inappropriate behavior by residents and guests E. Complete incident reports regarding policy violations and campus emergencies, submitting them in a timely manner to the Director of Residence Life F. Enforce policies in the residence hall, even when not technically “on call” G. Be on campus for any “all staff” weekends as designated by the Director of Residence Life and other administration V. Other Duties as Assigned A. Serve in programming and committee work as assigned by the Executive Director of Residential Life B. Assist in maintaining the Campus Care Hub C. Liaison with Physical Plant for decisions related to maintenance in residential facilities D. Liaison with Public Safety for residential safety and security-related issues and student programming E. Liaison with Academy to support collaborative Residence Life functions and events and provide additional residential life support services F. Assist with recruitment efforts such as admissions events, convocations and special events, as needed Qualifications Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and previous experience working in Residence Life required. Master’s degree in Student Affairs or a related field preferred. Ability to work non-traditional hours including evenings and weekends as needed Commitment to work effectively and collaboratively with individuals of all background to promote equity and diversity, to foster inclusion, and to effect positive change Commitment and desire to support institutional mission, vision, values, and strategic directions Ability to build and maintain relationships fostering an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and trust Demonstrated mentoring and coaching skills and an ability to foster teamwork Exceptional written and oral communication and presentation skills with the ability to deliver information in a clear, concise, and professional manner Excellent computer skills and experience with use of student information systems Physical Functions While performing the responsibilities of this position, the employee is required to travel moderate distances around campus to meet and communicate with employees, students, and other campus constituents in the performance of the essential duties and responsibilities; to work at a computer for extended periods of time; receive detailed information through auditory and oral communication; to express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and to work on campus and in an office setting.
