    "ExternalDescriptionStr": "<p><span>The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at East Tennessee State University invites applications for the position of Department Chair to begin July 2027.</span></p>\n<p><span>The Department has 13 tenured/tenure track faculty, 4 full-time teaching colleagues, and 3 adjuncts as well as currently 49 majors and 19 graduate students. The department is known for its high-quality teaching, research, and outreach; and it has recently launched a Master of Science in Applied Data Science program in conjunction with the Computation and Research in Data Science (CaRDS) institute, the Department of Computing, and the Statistical Consulting Lab. This program builds on our history of providing internship experiences for students and preparing masters students for exciting careers in data science, operations research, and statistics. This is in addition to a Master of Science degree in Mathematical Sciences and undergraduate degree concentrations in statistics, computational applied math, mathematical sciences or mathematics education. See&nbsp;</span><span><strong>http://www.etsu.edu/cas/math&nbsp;</strong></span><span>for more information.</span></p>\n<p><span>In this 12-month position, the chair is responsible to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for providing leadership and departmental administration; providing administrative oversight of our large outreach into the community, which includes a substantial dual enrollment program; maintaining the collegial atmosphere of the department; and enhancing the professional development and research productivity of departmental faculty and staff.&nbsp;</span></p>\n<p><span>Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students and are expected to have an active, ongoing research program. The chair is expected to foster and promote scholarly productivity and visibility of a diverse and active faculty while supporting innovative and high-quality teaching. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field as well the associate or full professor level. Priority will be given to candidates in Data Science and Statistics. They should have demonstrated leadership ability and effective communication skills.</span></p>\n<p><span>East Tennessee State University has an enrollment of approximately 15,000 students. We are a Carnegie Foundation doctoral research university, with associated Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine. ETSU is located in Johnson City, a city of 74,000 in Northeast Tennessee between the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The area offers many opportunities for outdoor recreation and enjoys a moderate climate with four distinct seasons.
