How You’ll Make an Impact We are seeking a full-time archaeologist/ field lead for our Portland or Seattle office. Qualified candidates interested in working remotely from other parts of the Pacific Northwest are also encouraged to apply. The successful applicant will help lead cultural resources field investigations in the Pacific Northwest, maintain excellence in Dudek’s fieldwork standards and data collection techniques, train early-career field archaeologists, and work collaboratively with existing Dudek staff. Direct experience working across Oregon and Washington is strongly desired, as well as experience in other regions of the country and the willingness to travel and work there, if required. The qualified candidate will have significant regional experience directing archaeological fieldwork, organizing and managing field crews, and coordinating with clients, landowners, and agency staff to support successful completion of fieldwork. Duties and Responsibilities Direct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork and data collection under the management of the principal investigator, ensuring quality control and adherence to professional standards throughout the process. Lead pre-field research, permitting, and logistics coordination and post-field data organization and QA/QC. Train and mentor other Dudek archaeological staff in all phases of fieldwork methodology (survey, testing, data recovery) and data collection techniques. Coordinate with Dudek project managers, landowners, clients, and agency staff prior to and during archaeological field sessions. Co-author/review methodology and results sections of reports, research designs, and other technical documents, as needed. Assist and collaborate on projects with staff outside the Pacific Northwest, as needed. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field 12+ years’ experience conducting archaeological fieldwork for cultural resource management projects in the Pacific Northwest Good knowledge of the history, archaeology, and ethnography of the Pacific Northwest Good working knowledge of federal cultural resources regulations and guidelines, as well as familiarity with state and local regulations in the Pacific Northwest, as they pertain to the execution of fieldwork. Maintains good professional relationships with the region’s archaeological community (field archaeologists/archaeological technicians as well as agency and Tribal staff). Ability to manage field crews, solve problems and make reasoned decisions in the field, and execute/logistically support project decisions Ability to operate field equipment, including GPS equipment, cameras, and tablets Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships Ability to provide and receive positive and constructive feedback Ability to resolve conflict through collaboration and communication Must possess a valid driver’s license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by first day of employment Preferred Qualifications Registered Archaeologist (RA) or ability and willingness to become an RA Knowledge of the history, archaeology, and ethnography of other Dudek regions outside of the Pacific Northwest Demonstrated laboratory and technical analysis expertise Knowledge of and experience using ESRI ArcGIS Online and Field Maps *Final agreed-upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location. Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check prior to beginning employment. Working Conditions This job operates in a remote or office-based environment and this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc. This job requires occasional project site visits, based outdoors which can include excessive noise, uneven walking surfaces, extreme weather, and moving vehicles and equipment. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This job requires the following: Working on a computer, sitting, or standing for long periods of time in an office or remote office setting. Employees must be capable of bending, squatting, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 35 lbs. unassisted; 50lbs in a team lift (two or more employees). This job requires attending meetings, both in person and virtually as well as speaking on the phone with government agency representatives, members of the public, and others. Speaking, hearing and listening are required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
