Description Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton. Media and Technology Studies invites applications for a term Academic Teaching Staff appointment to teach MST 299: Introduction to Digital Media Practice in Winter 2027. This course is being offered as a special topics course while calendar changes are being developed to establish a new digital media practice pathway in the Media Studies program. The course introduces students to digital media production and critical practice. Students will develop foundational skills in audio, video, image, text, and platform-based media while examining how digital media are shaped by audiences, technologies, institutions, and social contexts. Topics may include digital storytelling, audio and visual media, social and streaming platforms, accessibility, copyright, ethics, and portfolio development. The successful candidate will be able to bridge critical media studies and digital media production practice. We are especially interested in applicants who combine postsecondary teaching experience with active practice in digital media production. Relevant areas of experience may include digital storytelling, audio production, sound-based media, video production, short-form media, social media production, streaming, platform-based communication, digital publishing, accessibility, community media, documentary, journalism, or related forms of contemporary media practice. Responsibilities The instructor will be responsible for: Developing and teaching the course; Designing assignments and assessments appropriate to an introductory digital media practice course; Supporting students in developing short digital media projects; Integrating critical media studies concepts with hands-on production activities; Ensuring course materials and assignments attend to accessibility, copyright, consent, attribution, privacy, and ethical production practices; Managing course materials through Canvas; Coordinating with teaching assistants where applicable; Evaluating student work and submitting final grades. Qualifications Graduate-level training or equivalent professional experience in media studies, communication studies, digital media, media production, journalism, design, digital humanities, or a related field; Demonstrated teaching experience at the postsecondary level or equivalent experience leading workshops, training sessions, community media education, or professional media instruction; Demonstrated experience practicing in digital media production, especially in audio, video, platform-based, or multimodal media; Ability to teach introductory production skills to students with varying levels of prior experience; Capacity to connect practical production skills with critical approaches to media, platforms, audiences, representation, accessibility, ethics, and social context; Familiarity with contemporary lightweight production workflows using accessible tools such as smartphones, laptops, low-cost equipment, and free or commonly available editing software Ability to design inclusive, accessible, and scaffolded learning activities for students developing foundational digital media practice skills. The following would be considered assets: Experience teaching or designing courses in media studies, communication studies, digital media, media production, journalism, design, digital humanities, or related fields; Active professional, creative, community-based, or scholarly practice in digital media production; Experience with audio production, video production, digital storytelling, platform-based media, social media production, streaming, or online publishing; Experience teaching lecture, studio, workshop, project-based, or practice-based courses; Experience supervising or coordinating teaching assistants; Knowledge of accessible media practices, including captioning, transcripts, inclusive design, and accessible publishing; Knowledge of copyright, consent, attribution, privacy, and ethical issues in digital media production; Experience with portfolio-based assessment; Familiarity with Media Studies as a critical and interdisciplinary field.
