Description The Department of Agriculture at Austin Peay State University invites applications for a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track faculty position in the American Veterinary Medical Association Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (AVMA CVTEA) accredited Veterinary Technology concentration. This is a three-year renewable position. The successful candidate will contribute to the education and training of future veterinary technologists through classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction. The faculty member will work closely with the Program Director and program faculty to support curriculum development, student learning outcomes, and compliance with the standards of the AVMA CVTEA. Responsibilities include teaching veterinary technology courses, assisting with laboratory and clinical instruction, maintaining instructional and diagnostic equipment, and supporting ongoing program accreditation and assessment activities. The Veterinary Technology Program is housed within the Department of Agriculture and includes hands-on learning experiences using university farm resources, clinical equipment, and partnerships with regional animal or veterinary facilities. Primary Duties and Responsibilities The faculty member will perform duties consistent with university policies and program accreditation standards. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Teaching and Instruction Teach undergraduate veterinary technology courses in face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online learning environments. Provide classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical instruction consistent with the program curriculum. Prepare lectures, laboratory activities, and instructional materials reflective of current veterinary medical practice. Evaluate student performance and provide timely feedback on assignments, laboratory skills, and clinical competencies. Maintain accurate student records including grades, attendance, and competency assessments. Hold regular office hours and provide academic support and advising to students. Program Development and Accreditation Assist the Program Director in maintaining compliance with AVMA CVTEA accreditation standards. Participate in accreditation reporting, data collection, program assessment, and continuous quality improvement initiatives. Contribute to curriculum review, course development, and program enhancement. Support efforts to improve student learning outcomes and preparation for the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). Laboratory and Clinical Support Assist in the preparation and management of laboratory learning environments. Maintain, operate, and assist in troubleshooting veterinary diagnostic and instructional equipment used in laboratory and clinical teaching. Assist with procurement, inventory management, and maintenance of laboratory supplies and instructional materials. Ensure laboratory and clinical teaching activities are conducted safely and in accordance with institutional policies. Assist with the development and drafting of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols and ensure that all instructional activities involving animals follow approved IACUC policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Program and Department Service Collaborate with the Program Director and faculty in scheduling courses and coordinating instructional activities. Participate in program meetings, departmental meetings, and university committees as appropriate. Work with the Program Advisory Committee and external stakeholders to maintain program relevance to the veterinary profession. Assist with student recruitment, advising, and retention initiatives. Maintain effective professional relationships with veterinary clinics, industry partners, and professional organizations. Professional Development Maintain professional licensure and remain current with developments in veterinary medicine and veterinary technology. Participate in continuing education and professional activities relevant to teaching and veterinary practice. Required Qualifications A background search will be required of the successful applicant. Applicants must meet one of the following credential pathways: Veterinary Technician Pathway Graduate of an AVMA CVTEA-accredited Veterinary Technology program TN licensed Veterinary Technician (LVMT ) in good standing or eligible for licensure in the State of Tennessee Veterinarian Pathway Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited institution TN licensed veterinarian in good standing or eligible for licensure in the State of Tennessee Additional requirements: Clinical experience in veterinary medicine or veterinary technology Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and colleagues Ability to teach veterinary technology topics consistent with program curriculum Preferred Qualifications Teaching experience in higher education or veterinary technology education Experience working in or teaching within an AVMA CVTEA-accredited veterinary technology program Experience with program accreditation, outcome assessment, or curriculum development Clinical experience in companion animal, mixed animal, or food animal practice Background or familiarity with agriculture or livestock production Experience with veterinary diagnostic equipment and laboratory instruction Strong organizational, communication, and mentoring skills Working Conditions and Physical Requirements The position may involve standing for extended periods, lifting up to approximately 40 pounds, handling animals, and working in clinical or laboratory environments. Instructional, recruiting, or mentorship responsibilities may occasionally include evening or weekend activities depending on laboratory or clinical scheduling needs.
