Description

THE POSITION: Implement and monitor academic standards and excellence for Tribal children tutor students in specific area of need, plan activities and document educational progress.  Work with Tribal children on a daily basis both in school and after school to achieve academic success. The incumbent is expected to work in accordance with the mission, purpose, and values of the Colusa Indian Community Council. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable incumbents with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job. In and after school tutoring with tribal member students which may require: the ability to work with children who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, using general education curriculum, or modify to meet the child’s individual needs; ability to communicate with teachers and parents to support the educational progress of the students; act as a mentor and educational advocate to assist in the students’ progress; and monitor grade reports for every student. Plan and implement activities that encourage educational achievement. Assess, assist and encourage students in the learning process. Explain problem-solving methods in an easy-to-understand way. Provide encouragement and positive motivation. Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners. Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students’ diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences. Transport students to/from tutoring program and/or Department activities. Prepping and light cooking of snacks/meals as needed for the program. Process POs as needed for Department. Assist with planning, organizing, facilitating and supervising youth activities, including but not limited to all activities planned within programs of the Community Services Department. Follow organizational health and safety standards for cleaning and sanitizing. Act as a liaison between the Tribal community and educational agencies on behalf of Indian students and parents. Advocate for students and parents with individual teachers, schools and educational agencies. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, participants and parents. Provide support to parents in addressing issues hindering their children’s educational success, including areas of Special Education and individuals with disabilities. Educate parents as to their rights, as well as the rights of the students. Develop and initiate ongoing parental orientation and support. Provide emotional and behavioral support to youth and families. May perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education : High school degree or equivalent Completion of core course work from an accredited college or university in Education, Liberal Studies, Child Development, or closely related field preferred Additional related education or training may be substituted for the required one year of experience or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities Experience : Entry-level tutors should have demonstrated expertise in the subjects they will be tutoring. Minimum of one-year experience in working with youth and/or families is necessary, paraprofessional experience a plus. Knowledge and tutoring experience high school math and science are highly desirable. Experience in the development, implementation and coordination of programming would be an asset. Licensing and Other Qualifications: Must be eighteen (18) years of age. Valid California driver’s license. Must obtain and maintain a current certificate in CPR/First aid and health/safety requirements. Must maintain compliance with Licensing and clear criminal clearance and child abuse index. Must be fingerprinted and on file with licensing agency pre-employment. SUPERVISORIAL DUTIES:   None ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Must possess excellent communication skills, positive attitude and have the ability to cooperate with others. A great deal of time will be spent interacting with students, parents, school personnel, and other staff involved with the students. Knowledge of California academic standards. Experience working with diverse populations. Willingness to work with a team of staff and departments to meet the needs of the Tribal community. Exceptional interpersonal, communication skills and positive attitude. Able to work in a fast-paced environment & able to multi-task. Flexibility and ability to assist others when needed. Must enjoy working with children to succeed in their education. Must enjoy working with diverse groups of people. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee: Must be able to stand; walk and stand on an intermittent or continual basis; and May occasionally lift and/or move up to 25-50 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level is usually low to usually moderate. Overtime may be required to perform some of the required duties.
