Description
Essential Functions Coordinates daily orthopedic instrument processing activities to support surgical schedules and ensure timely case readiness
Prioritizes workflow for orthopedic trays in decontamination, prep/pack, and sterilization areas
Ensures proper cleaning, assembly, and sterilization of orthopedic instrument sets in accordance with AAMI, AORN, HSPA standards and manufacturer IFUs
Serves as a resource for identification, inspection, and troubleshooting of orthopedic instrumentation and equipment
Collaborates with OR staff to verify instrumentation needs, preference cards, and case-specific requirements
Reviews and maintains accuracy of orthopedic tray count sheets and instrument tracking documentation
Assists with inventory control, including monitoring par levels, missing instruments, and replacement needs
Coordinates handling and processing of vendor loaner trays according to facility policy
Conducts quality checks on trays and sterilization documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards
Participates in performance improvement initiatives to reduce errors, improve turnaround time, and enhance workflow efficiency
Assists with staff training and competency validation related to orthopedic instrumentation and processes
Maintains communication with leadership regarding instrumentation issues, delays, or process improvement opportunities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of orthopedic surgical instrumentation and tray systems
Understanding of sterilization processes, infection prevention, and AAMI, AORN, HSPA standards
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage workflow in a high-volume environment
Effective communication and collaboration skills
Basic computer skills and instrument tracking system proficiency
Attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
Physical Requirements Requires standing, walking, and lifting instrument trays up to 25–35 pounds
Exposure to biological hazards, chemicals, and high-temperature sterilization equipment
Repetitive motion and manual dexterity required
Work Environment Central Sterile Processing Department (decontamination, prep/pack, sterile storage)
Interaction with Operating Room staff and surgical teams
Education High School Diploma or GED required
Graduate of an accredited Sterile Processing Course
Experience Minimum of 20 years Central Sterile Processing experience required
Orthopedic instrumentation experience required
Lead or coordinator experience preferred
Licensure/Certification CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) required
CIS (Certified Instrument Specialist) or a minimal of 20 years' experience in the Orthopedic Central Processing Industry.
