Description

Responsibilities & Requirements As a key member of the senior executive team, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides strategic leadership, direction, and coordination for divisional operations, aligning them with the organization’s mission and objectives. The CMO acts as the senior medical authority at KH sites, serving as a vital liaison between Administration and the Medical Staff. This role is pivotal in advising administration on medical and clinical matters, promoting, and embodying the mission, vision, and core values of Kettering Health, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals. KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: Leadership & Strategy: Develop and champion the hospital’s patient safety and clinical quality agenda in collaboration with the executive responsible for quality and performance improvement. Establish annual goals, performance targets, and metrics, and facilitate information dissemination and knowledge management related to safety and quality. Clinical Standards & Outcomes: Define standards of care, enhance clinical outcomes, and disseminate best practices across the organization. Support & Collaboration: Assist the Chief of Staff, Medical Executive Committee, and Medical Staff in their roles to foster a culture of patient safety and quality. Provide support in achieving optimal hospital performance and clinical excellence. Committee Leadership: Chair or support key physician committees focusing on clinical program alignment, strategic planning, integration of care standards, research, and continuous quality improvement. Typically, the CMO will chair formal committees only when necessary to cover for absent medical staff officers. Liaison Responsibilities: Serve as the primary clinical liaison to the Quality and Safety Board Subcommittee and the community, fostering effective working relationships with all clinical staff including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and advanced practice providers. Physician Recruitment & Relations: Assist with physician recruitment, promote physician and patient satisfaction, and support the hospital’s efforts in physician retention and relations. Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., HFAP, CMS, federal and state regulations) and support the hospital’s strategic planning and development efforts. Executive Participation: Actively participate in Kettering Health physician leadership meetings, the hospital’s Executive Council, and assist in the development and implementation of the hospital’s Strategic Plan. Utilization Review: Oversee and provide clinical supervision of the hospital’s utilization review program. Integration & Growth: Evaluate and facilitate the consolidation and integration of clinical services and oversee the administration of the Medical Staff Bylaws. Support and promote the growth of clinical education initiatives. Mission & Values Expectations : To live God’s love by promoting and restoring health. Executive leaders are expected to integrate this Mission into strategic decision-making, leadership behaviors, and organizational priorities—ensuring actions consistently reflect compassion, integrity, and service. Excellent communication skills with a strong track record in fostering collaboration, building consensus, and achieving collective objectives. Experience with or appreciation of community-based medical practice, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Familiarity with Ohio medical licensure practices, reporting requirements for the State Medical Board, and the National Practitioner Data Bank. Strong interpersonal skills with a positive demeanor in problem-solving and dealing with people. Advanced analytical and organizational skills necessary for leading and managing a complex clinical enterprise. Ability to communicate effectively, delegate tasks, and hold team members accountable. Awareness of national healthcare industry trends and their potential impact on providers and the industry. Required M.D. or D.O. degree Board Certification in a clinical specialty Master’s degree in health administration, Business Administration or Certified Physician Executive Certificate, desirable Appropriate continuing education courses Licensure, Certifications, Registrations: Ohio Medical License Board Certification Active member on the medical staff of Kettering Health Required Ten years’ clinical practice experience. Three years’ experience in medical management and administration.
