Job Title:                      Technical Theatre Technician Department:                 Arts & Entertainment Reports to:                   Technical Supervisor FLSA Status:                Non-Exempt Revised:                       04/01/25 Pay Rate:                      Pay range starts at $16.50 per hour ATTENTION: Seeking dependable, enthusiastic, and self-motivated Theatre Technicians to support the Fair Oaks Performing Arts Center (FOPAC) and Fair Oaks Recreation & Park District (FORPD) events. Candidates should have a strong interest or experience in technical theatre, particularly AV and lighting systems. This on-call/part-time position includes evening and weekend hours and is ideal for those who thrive in a collaborative, live event environment. Job Summary:  Under the direction of the Technical Supervisor, the Theatre Technician assists with the technical execution of performances, rehearsals, and community events. Responsibilities focus on operating and maintaining lighting, sound, and video equipment while also providing general backstage and production support as needed. This role ensures safe and efficient technical operations while maintaining the high standards of the Arts & Entertainment Division and Fair Oaks Performing Arts Center. Hours: Varies depending on event schedules; on-call and part-time, including weekends and evenings. Essential Functions: The following duties are typical for this classification. However, incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties to meet evolving needs: Operate lighting, sound, and projection equipment during events, rehearsals, and rentals. Assist with the setup, strike, and technical load-in/load-out of events and performances. Conduct routine maintenance and basic troubleshooting on AV and lighting equipment. Support technical needs for performers, renters, staff, and community programs. Assist with stage management, backstage safety, and run crew tasks. Communicate effectively and professionally with the Technical Supervisor, event organizers, and fellow staff. Provide support for other District-wide events as needed. Ensure a safe, clean, and organized environment in all technical and backstage areas. Follow all safety procedures and guidelines during technical work. Job Requirements: Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team. Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. Strong organizational, technical, and communication skills. Familiarity with live event environments and performance spaces. Comfortable working with ladders, heights, and basic tools and equipment. Knowledge, Skill and Experience: Knowledge of various activities and classes art inspired or recreational programming for all ages, including facility and materials, use; techniques, principles, and procedures used to deliver high-quality arts-inspired recreation programs. Minimum Education required : High school diploma or general education degree (GED); technical theatre coursework, hands-on experience, or relevant certification preferred. Minimum Experience required: One year of experience in AV, stage lighting, or live event production is preferred. Experience as a board operator is a plus. Other requirements: All applicants must be fingerprinted and pass a pre-employment background check. Reliable transportation to and from work. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret technical documents, follow oral/written instructions, and communicate effectively with staff and clients. Mathematical SKILLS: Basic math skills for measuring cable runs, electrical loads, and calculating simple operations for setup and maintenance. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to solve practical problems and apply sound judgment during high-pressure or time-sensitive situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver's license, proof of personal vehicle insurance, and a satisfactory driving record are required. At the option of the appointing authority, persons hired into this class may be required to either possess at entry or obtain within specified time limits designated licenses, certifications, or specialized education and training relevant to the area of assignment. CPR/First Aid Certification and/or AV certifications are a plus. Computer SKILLS: Basic computer literacy is required. Familiarity with digital lighting consoles (e.g., ETC), QLab, and audio software is desirable. Physical and emotional DEMANDS: The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The position also requires near and far vision when inspecting and performing work activities, operating vehicles, tools, and equipment, and preparing paperwork and reports. Performs heavy physical labor, such as lifting (up to 30-50 pounds), carrying heavy objects, and using a shovel and other equipment to dig. Climbs ladder and works at heights. Exposure to fumes, dust, and air contaminants which may cause eye and skin irritation. Work involves physical exertion and exposure to bright lighting, loud sounds, and crowded backstage conditions. Work ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
