Peer Support Specialist

The Problem Severe mental illness affects over 15 million adults in the United States. Schizophrenia. Schizoaffective disorder. Bipolar I. Treatment-resistant depression. These are the conditions the rest of healthcare has systematically failed to build for. What makes this problem different from most of healthcare is that the tools to solve it do not exist. The clinical protocols, the measurement science, the precision medicine, the technology to deliver coordinated longitudinal outpatient care for this population. None of it has been built. This is a frontier problem, and it requires frontier science and care delivery to solve. We are developing all of it. The care, the science, the technology. Who We Are Amae Health is a Series B, venture-backed Public Benefit Corporation that delivers specialty outpatient care for people living with severe mental illness, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar I disorder, and treatment-resistant depression. We design and operate high-acuity, in-person clinics across the United States. Our model integrates psychiatry, therapy, primary care, dietitians, and community health workers under one roof to deliver coordinated, longitudinal care for a population that has historically been fragmented across systems. Leading health systems collaborate with Amae to bring this model to their communities, including New York-Presbyterian, Cedars-Sinai, Mass General Brigham, Novant Health, and CommonSpirit Health . Team-based care, thoughtful caseloads, and strong infrastructure make this work meaningful—and sustainable over time. The Role Full-time, on-site Peer Support Specialist at our Charlotte, NC clinic. Schedule for this role is Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm ET. What You'll Work On Provide one-on-one coaching to support members' personal goals, inspire self-discovery, and strengthen skills for recovery Plan and lead group activities that encourage participation, build community, and celebrate progress (e.g., in-clinic recovery groups, community outings, day trips) Help members access and navigate community resources, including housing, SNAP benefits, employment services, and other social resources Conduct field work in the community, including home check-ins and attending events with members as a supportive peer Collaborate with teammates and clinical staff to ensure every member receives compassionate, coordinated support Complete required administrative tasks and documentation accurately and on time Participate in ongoing training and supervision; attend team meetings and case discussions What You'll Have Certified Peer Support Specialist (CPSS) certification required Minimum 2 years of stable, personal recovery High school diploma or equivalent required At least 2 years of experience supporting individuals with mental health and/or substance use challenges Strong coaching and motivational skills, with ability to support individuals through challenges and model effective coping strategies Ability to engage effectively one-on-one and in groups; group facilitation experience preferred Knowledge of the Charlotte area mental health and social service systems Understanding of member rights, confidentiality, and trauma-informed care Holistic approach to health and wellness Basic computer proficiency (Google Suite, EHR documentation) What We're Building As a clinician at Amae, you are not adjacent to this work.
