Description
General Function:
Under the direction of the Swim Lesson supervisor, the Swim Lesson Instructor will teach swim lessons according to the National YMCA Program. He/She is responsible for taking roll, greeting parents and children, teaching classes, attending scheduled meetings and creating lesson plans.
Entry Requirements:
Preferred Red Cross WSI, YMCA Instructor Certification, or 1 year experience teaching Youth Swimming Red Cross First Aid Red Cross CPR with AED .
Essential Functions Of Job:
Incorporate and Model our YMCA Christian principles into your work Commit to establishing long-term relationships with staff, volunteers, participants, members and families Instruct in water and lift or support 50 pounds Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations and apply appropriate instructional techniques Be familiar with and support the Mission of the YMCA. Position requires pushing, pulling, bending, twisting, and swimming, sitting, standing, walking and lifting.
Job Segments:
Teach classes in accordance with the National YMCA Aquatics program each day of the session. Instructors will be 15 minutes early to class to greet parents and children; will remain in pool area and help clean up pool area after classes. Instructor will use gentleness and humor to instruct classes. Instructor will plan class lessons and have an organized format for the day. Lesson plans will include character values, safety skills, songs, games and swimming practice. Instructor will understand the mission of the YMCA – developing people’s spirit, mind and body through the mode of swimming. Instructor will adhere to policies and guidelines of the YMCA (no street shoes on the deck, take shower before entering pool, safety procedures, take roll, etc.) Instructor will support the YMCA, in general the staff supervisors, volunteers, members and community. Instructors will be well-groomed dressed for the activities. Assist with staff training and orientation. Direct, conduct, and evaluate classes assigned. Document student’s progress on report cards to be distributed to parents. Establish good rapport with parents and children. Document any substitutions, lost or broken equipment, and injuries to supervisor. Attend all staff meetings. Provide safe and clean environment for children. Attire includes swim instructor uniform shirt and black shorts. Perform all other duties as assigned.

Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills, perceives, understands and manages interactions appropriately, is accountable for own actions, capitalizes on learning opportunities and is open to performance feedback and coaching. Demonstrates compliance in the following areas: Compli, employee paperwork, performance evaluations, personnel policies and procedures i.e. dress code, code of conduct. Attends mandatory trainings and meetings, acquires and maintains required certifications for current position. Integrates logic, intuition and sound judgment to analyze information to identify greatest opportunities, make sound decisions, and solve problems. Leads self and others through change by navigating ambiguity appropriately and adapting well to new situations, obstacles, and opportunities.
