Description
The Electrical Project Manager is responsible for leading the planning, engineering, and execution of greenfield power generation projects with a specific focus on gas reciprocating engine plants and behind-the-meter (BTM) applications for industrial, commercial, and utility clients. This role provides overall project leadership across scope, schedule, cost, quality, and risk; coordinates multi-discipline engineering teams; and serves as the primary interface between Sargent & Lundy, clients, contractors, and equipment suppliers from early development through commissioning and turnover.
Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership & Execution
Lead full lifecycle execution of greenfield power generation projects (concept development through commissioning and closeout), with emphasis on gas recip and BTM assets.
Develop and manage project execution plans, including scope definition, WBS, schedule (Level 2/3), budget, risk register, and change management.
Coordinate multi-discipline engineering (electrical, mechanical, civil/structural, I&C) to ensure integrated, constructible, and operable designs.
Drive progress meetings, action tracking, decision logs, and status reporting for internal leadership and clients.
Manage formal project controls processes, including forecasting, earned value, and change orders.
Technical & Design Oversight
Provide technical oversight for medium- and low-voltage power systems, generator interconnection, protection & controls, grounding, and balance-of-plant electrical systems.
Oversee conceptual and detailed design for gas reciprocating engine power plants, including generator sizing, auxiliary systems, and integration with plant electrical distribution.
Lead BTM project development, including load profiling, capacity and resilience analysis, microgrid/controls concepts, and economic evaluation for customer-sited assets.
Review and approve key engineering deliverables (one-lines, three-lines, protection schemes, cable schedules, layouts, interconnection drawings, load flow/short circuit/coordination studies).
Coordinate and review OEM/vendor documentation for engines, generators, switchgear, protection relays, UPS, transformers, and control systems.
Commercial & Contract Management
Support business development and proposal efforts for greenfield and BTM power projects, including scope development, estimating, and schedule development.
Participate in contract and change-order negotiations with clients and major vendors, in coordination with internal commercial/legal teams.
Monitor and control project financial performance, including margin protection, contingency management, and invoicing support.
Stakeholder & Interface Management
Serve as primary client point of contact for assigned projects; maintain alignment on scope, technical requirements, milestones, and success criteria.
Lead interfaces with:
Utilities and ISOs/RTOs for interconnection and metering requirements.
AHJs, permitting agencies, and code officials as required.
EPC contractors, construction managers, and OEMs during design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
Prepare and deliver clear technical and commercial presentations to client stakeholders and internal leadership.
Construction, Commissioning & Safety
Support construction planning, field engineering, and resolution of RFIs and non-conformances related to electrical scope.
Coordinate FATs, SATs, and integrated commissioning for engines, generators, switchgear, and protection & controls.
Ensure adherence to HSE requirements, including NFPA 70/70E, OSHA, and client-specific safety programs; champion a strong safety culture across all project phases.
Leadership & Mentoring
Provide leadership and direction to project engineers, designers, and discipline leads assigned to the project.
Mentor junior staff in project management fundamentals, client interaction, and power generation design practices.
Contribute to continuous improvement of tools, templates, and best practices for gas reciprocating and BTM projects.
This position is based on a hybrid work schedule and will require in-office work 3 days per week.
Qualifications
We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.
Essential skills and experience:
BSEE from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program is required; MSEE preferred.
15+ years of experience in power/energy projects, with at least 5 years as a project manager or lead for capital projects.
Demonstrated experience delivering greenfield power generation projects, preferably including:
Gas reciprocating engine plants (simple cycle, peaking, or CHP/cogeneration).
Behind-the-meter or distributed energy resources (DER), microgrids, or campus/industrial power systems.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or ability to obtain.
Strong knowledge of:
Power system engineering (MV/LV distribution, grounding, protection, arc flash, motor starting).
Gas reciprocating engine-generator sets and associated auxiliaries.
BTM/microgrid architectures, islanding/black start concepts, and controls philosophies.
Familiarity with utility interconnection standards, grid codes, and metering requirements.
Proficiency with project scheduling and project controls tools (e.g., Primavera P6, MS Project) and standard office software.
Construction and start-up experience is a plus.
Proven ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams and manage multiple stakeholders.
Strong communication skills (written and verbal), with the ability to clearly present complex technical and commercial topics.
Demonstrated capability to manage competing priorities, resolve conflicts, and make timely decisions under schedule and budget constraints.
High level of professional integrity, ownership, and commitment to delivering safe, high-quality projects.
Additional Information
