With deep integrations across access control, identity, compliance screening, and collaboration tools—including LenelS2, Brivo, Genetec, Honeywell, Cisco Meraki, Okta, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Teams, Slack, ServiceNow, DocuSign, Avigilon Alta, and Descartes Visual Compliance—Envoy helps organizations reduce risk, stay audit-ready, and operate with clarity at scale. Learn more at envoy.com This is an L5 opportunity. Successful candidates typically come from staff or principal-level roles and are recognized for establishing technical direction, leading large-scale initiatives, and shaping engineering strategy across organizations. About the role At Envoy we’re writing the operating system for the modern office: a fully‑integrated platform that lets employees reserve desks and rooms, greet visitors, track deliveries, receive emergency alerts, and see interactive maps of the workplace —while our real‑time pipelines unify badge swipes, Wi‑Fi pings, sensors, and more into a single analytics engine that facilities teams use to right‑size space and budgets. This infrastructure already powers 16,000 workplaces and 9,000+ companies—including names like Netflix, Disney, GitHub, and Nvidia—and it’s the only solution on the market that truly connects people, spaces, and data end‑to‑end. Join our lean, product‑driven engineering team and you’ll design resilient micro‑services, build blazing‑fast mobile experiences, craft models that predict occupancy, and ship features that shape how millions collaborate every day. If you want to solve juicy real‑world problems at global scale—and see your code light up offices around the world—come build the future of work with us. This on-site position requires 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday) in our San Francisco HQ office. You will Own and evolve Envoy’s core infrastructure platform to be opinionated and well-bounded, ensuring shared systems are not the dominant source of customer-facing downtime. Define and own infrastructure SLOs, error budgets, and operational signals for core Kubernetes and cloud services, using them to guide prioritization, incident response, and platform investment. Design and lead the architecture and standards for AWS infrastructure, with Terraform as the source of truth and a strong focus on consistency, safety, and auditability. Own the Kubernetes platform and its surrounding ecosystem, including cluster architecture, scaling strategies, observability, and operational best practices. Build and maintain paved paths for service deployment, CI/CD, networking, observability, and access control, reducing ad-hoc infrastructure decisions and the need for direct production access. Partner closely with application, security, and developer experience teams to design infrastructure that meets product needs while enforcing clear guardrails and ownership boundaries. Drive meaningful reductions in operational toil by improving defaults, automation, and platform ergonomics, including pragmatic adoption of AI-assisted workflows where they demonstrably improve signal, safety, or speed. Participate in the on-call rotation and ensure incidents result in durable fixes and systemic improvements, not repeated manual intervention. You success looks like Core infrastructure services consistently meet or exceed defined SLOs, with reliability owned and operated by Infrastructure. Engineers can deploy new services or environments using standardized patterns without bespoke infrastructure work or unclear ownership. Infrastructure changes are predictable, reviewable, and low-risk, with Terraform plans that clearly communicate intent and impact. Operational noise decreases over time as a result of better defaults, automation, and platform clarity. One or more meaningful legacy infrastructure friction points are removed or are on a clear path to deprecation. Leadership has data-backed insight into infrastructure trade-offs, including cost, resilience, and regional or multi-region considerations. The infrastructure team is seen as a trusted platform owner and enabler, not a bottleneck or ticket queue. You have 10+ years of experience building and operating cloud infrastructure at scale, with deep expertise in AWS. Strong hands-on experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tools, and a clear point of view on declarative infrastructure and guardrails. Deep experience designing, operating, and evolving Kubernetes platforms in production environments. Proven ability to design systems that balance reliability, security, developer experience, and cost. Experience influencing CI/CD systems and deployment workflows at an organizational or platform level. Strong software engineering skills in at least one general-purpose language such as Go or Python, and comfort with shell tooling. A solid understanding of distributed systems, networking, and production operations. Excellent communication skills and the ability to lead through influence rather than authority. Nice to have Experience in high-growth or startup environments where platforms evolve rapidly. Familiarity with SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar compliance frameworks. Experience partnering closely with security teams on secure-by-default infrastructure and access models. Exposure to service mesh, advanced networking patterns, or multi-region architectures. Experience applying AI-assisted tools or workflows to improve infrastructure safety, speed, or operational signal. You'll get High trust and autonomy to shape Envoy’s infrastructure platform and technical direction. The opportunity to have a broad, visible impact across the entire engineering organization. A collaborative, inclusive culture that values craftsmanship, learning, and ownership. The chance to help customers create great workplace experiences by enabling reliable, scalable products. Strong support for personal and professional growth. By applying for this position, you acknowledge that you have fully read and understand the job requirements and received the Envoy Privacy Notice for applicants, which is linked here .
