    "ExternalDescriptionStr": "<p><span>The University of Southern Maine’s Department of Chemistry invites applicants for a 9-month, fixed length faculty appointment at the Lecturer rank for the 2026-2027 academic year (late August – May).</span></p>\n<p><span>This instructor will be required to teach &nbsp;four courses each semester (fall/spring). &nbsp;Teaching responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:</span></p>\n<ul>\n <li><b>Quantum Chemistry (CHY 371) (Fall 2026)</b> - Principles of theoretical&nbsp;chemistry: quantum mechanics and spectroscopy. Topics include: quantization of translational, rotational, vibrational, and electronic energy; hydrogen orbitals; variational method and perturbation theory; multielectron atoms; chemical bonding; group theory; spectroscopy; and introductory statistical mechanics.</li>\n <li><b>Laboratory Techniques I Lab sections (CHY 114) (Fall 2026)</b> - A project-based laboratory experience to illustrate the principles presented in Principles of Chemistry I (CHY 113).</li>\n <li><b>Thermodynamics Lecture and Lab (CHY 373 &amp; 374) (Spring 2027)</b> - Principles of theoretical&nbsp;chemistry: classical thermodynamics, molecular energetics, equilibrium, reaction kinetics, statistical thermodynamics, and electrochemistry.</li>\n <li><b>Laboratory Techniques II Lab sections (CHY 116) (Spring 2027)</b> - A project-based laboratory experience to illustrate the principles presented in Principles of Chemistry II (CHY 115).</li>\n</ul>\n<p><span>The&nbsp;</span><a href=\"https://usm.maine.edu/department-chemistry/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span>Department of Chemistry</span></a><span> at the University of Southern Maine&nbsp;</span><span>prepares students for careers in industry, healthcare, education, and graduate study.&nbsp; The department emphasizes hands-on learning, faculty-mentored research, and interdisciplinary engagement, and is committed to fostering an inclusive environment that supports student success, scientific inquiry, and community impact.
