Description
The Agency You’ll Join:
The New York City Mayor’s Office is responsible for overseeing city services throughout the five boroughs, coordinating public agencies and departments, and managing public property. The administration is leading the fight in making the city more affordable, reducing inequality, improving public safety, ensuring delivery of efficient and effective services, and working to make New York City’s economy stronger. We value leadership, transparency, fairness, and efficiency as we actively seek diverse talents from various sectors to join our team. For current job opportunities, visit our careers page.
The Team You’ll Work With:
The Mayor’s Office of Appointments (MOA) is responsible for helping the Mayor in identifying and selecting candidates to serve as commissioners and other senior-level roles, as well as individuals to serve on more than 200 boards and commissions vital to the operation and growth of the City. MOA serves a critical role by providing talent recruitment support for the Administration, helping to build a strategy to create a sustainable and diverse talent pipeline for the Administration’s senior leadership positions.
The Problems You’ll Solve:
The Chief of Staff will:
- Serve as a senior operational and strategic partner to the Director of Appointments, helping manage the day-to-day functioning of the office and drive execution across major workstreams and priorities.
- Lead a portfolio of executive leadership support and development initiatives for Commissioners and senior administration officials, including training, onboarding, convening leadership programming, and ongoing support structures designed to strengthen management capacity.
- Develop and oversee the office’s internal leadership development strategy, including mentorship programs, fellowship and cohort models, affinity and community-building initiatives, and other efforts aimed at strengthening leadership pathways and organizational culture across city government.
- Build and maintain systems, processes, and tracking tools that improve coordination, accountability, and long-term operational capacity across the office and its growing portfolio of work.
About You:
- You have excellent communication, writing, analytical, and organizational skills.
- You have strong political judgment and discretion; able to navigate complex relationships and fast-moving situations thoughtfully, professionally, and calmly under pressure.
- You are an excellent operational leader and systems builder. Able to build strong processes, improve coordination, and help turn new ideas into sustainable programs and systems.
- You are detail oriented with excellent organizational, prioritization, and multitasking ability.
- You are comfortable moving between big-picture planning and hands-on execution, whether that means helping shape long-term leadership initiatives, preparing for sensitive conversations and decisions, managing follow-through on key priorities, or jumping in on smaller day-to-day tasks as needed in a fast-moving environment.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- 5+ years of experience.
