JOB TITLE:
Wildlife Toxicology Research Assistant
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:
Department of Zoology & Physiology
Job location: Laramie, WY
Pay rate or range: $12.00/hour
JOB PURPOSE:
The Bernard Research Lab is seeking a work study student to support graduate student research on the impacts of heavy metal contamination on bats in the Black Hills, South Dakota. Responsibilities will include weighing and preparing bat hair samples, performing acid digestion, and analyzing samples for heavy metal concentrations using Total X-Ray Fluorescence (TXRF) spectrometry. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with new analysis technology, contribute to an emerging field in conservation research, and develop technical skills applicable across biology, chemistry, and environmental science fields.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Working towards a degree in wildlife biology, biology, or related field
Must be eligible, have received and accepted work study award through Student Financial Aid for the applicable semester and/or academic year.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with lab work techniques such as pipetting and safety training for working with corrosive acids
EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS APPLICABLE TO CAREERS:
Work study students who engage in active research will have the opportunity to assist with other lab related activities, including but not limited to acoustic and camera trap analysis, conducting cave surveys in winter, etc.
