ABOUT THE CALIFORNIA VIRTUAL ACADEMIES AND THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT SPECIALIST (ELDS) POSITION: The California Virtual Academies (a network of 9 public charter schools) delivers online/virtual home based instruction to TK-12 students in California. While our schools do offer some scheduling flexibility, students are required to complete approximately 4-6 hours of coursework daily and log attendance. K12, inc. is our curriculum provider. English Language Development (ELD) specialists meet with students throughout the week in virtual classrooms to provide standards-based targeted instruction based on the CA ELD Standards that meet the language needs of the students, as well as support students in content area coursework, provide additional one-to-one support, and provide curriculum support to homeroom and content teachers. ELD specialists build lasting relationships with their students through consistent outreach throughout the school year and monitor attendance and engagement. Additionally, ELD specialists provide interventions as needed to ensure students remain engaged and grow academically. ELD specialists’ caseloads are generally made up of either elementary (K-5), middle school (6-8), or high school (9-12) students. ELD specialists are required to connect virtually with students once per quarter at minimum and attend one in-person event each quarter. All ELD specialists are required to proctor state testing. Please Note: Although ELD specialists can be assigned a grade span of elementary, middle, or high school, all interested applicants will need to be willing to teach all grades, K-12. HOURS AND SALARY INFORMATION: Full time employees work Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:00pm. You are not allowed to have another job during these contracted hours. Full Time ELDS: Annual salary based on holding a Bachelors or Masters Degree and up to 3 years of experience in California We do participate in CalSTRS. Please contact your CalSTRS counselor about how employment with any of the California Virtual Academies may affect your personal STRS account. Only full time employees are offered health, dental, and vision benefits. Benefits information is only given out upon offer. We do provide training for all programs and we have a great staff to serve as your support system. Job Title: English Language Development Specialist Reports To: Coordinator of English Language Development/ELD Lead FLSA Status: Exempt Overview: Virtual schools are new models in public education. They look both backward to what we know works well in educating children, and forward to see how technology can help us implement these strategies with children. Virtual school teachers are part of a pioneering effort. Our teachers, therefore, need to share the School’s pioneering mission and approach. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: • Serve as point of contact for ELD software company • Manage student accounts and instructional path, monitor and report weekly progress, train new users, and assist with troubleshooting • Attend and participate in software training • Schedule and instruct small group online sessions to ensure identified EL caseload students are mastering ELD standards using ELD curriculum and SDAIE strategies. • Provide intensive ELD intervention as needed dependent upon EL level Document all ELD interventions provided • Plan and moderate an ELD Program Orientation • Identify possible EL students, facilitate ELPAC testing, and identify correct placement of eligible students for ELD services and support. • Attend yearly English Language Proficiency Assessment for California (ELPAC) “train the trainer” workshop in-person • Work with supervisor to train all general education teachers on ELPAC administration and follow up training • Prepare ELPAC score notification letters • Maintain shared spreadsheet with current list of ELD students, ELPAC scores, and other ELPAC/EL related information • Process all reclassifications, monitor reclassified students, and maintain forms • Receive, interpret, and document teacher commentary regarding student reclassification; prepare reclassification status letter for student CUM records • Communicate clearly and consistently to ELD families and general education teachers, including weekly newsletters, participation in ELD software program, and distribution of ELPAC scores and reclassification notification letters • Receive, manage, and respond to school-wide questions regarding ELD • Responsible for all data, tracking and reports related to compliance issues for the ELL program and monitoring the progress of ELL students • Help maintain ELD Status in Total View Schools and School Pathways SIS • Ensure ELD students complete all assessments • Proctor state/federal test, in-person, as assigned. • Participate in school-wide activities (Park day, Book fair, etc) • Other duties as assigned Requirements/Experience: • Reside in the state of California • Bachelor's degree • Strong content and subject-matter knowledge • Ability to support and guide adults, as well as students • Strong written and verbal communication skills • Organization and time-management skills • Excellent writing and grammar skills • Flexible schedule • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, and Outlook, PowerPoint and experience using them in a professional capacity • Self-directed but comfortable working as part of a team • Attend in-person training as scheduled • Current Teacher (desired) • Knowledgeable in English Language Development (ELD) legal matters regarding ELD status • and instructional practices Certificates and Licenses: • Must hold a valid California Multiple or Single Subject teaching credential • California English Learner Authorization Competencies: Business Ethics: Inspires the trust of others; Keeps commitments; Treats people with respect; Upholds organizational values; Works with integrity and ethically Communications: Exhibits good listening and comprehension; Expresses ideas and thoughts in written form; Expresses ideas and thoughts verbally; Keeps others adequately informed; Selects and uses appropriate communication methods Leadership: Exhibits confidence in self and others; Inspires respect and trust; Motivates others to perform well; Reacts well under pressure; Shows courage to act Managing People: Develops subordinates' skills and encourages growth; Includes subordinates in planning; Makes self-available to subordinates; Provides direction and gains compliance; Provides regular performance feedback; Takes responsibility for subordinates' activities Planning & Organization: Integrates changes smoothly; Plans for additional resources; Prioritizes and plans work activities; Sets goals and objectives; Uses time efficiently; Works in an organized manner Quality Management: Fosters quality focus in others; Improves processes, products and services; Measures key outcomes; Sets clear quality requirements; Solicits and applies customer feedback Team Leadership: Acknowledges team accomplishments; Defines team roles and responsibilities; Ensures progress toward goals; Fosters team cooperation; Supports group problem solving Use of Technology: Adapts to new technologies; Demonstrates required skills; Keeps technical skills up to date; Troubleshoots technological problems; Uses technology to increase productivity Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
