Description

Who are we? Newmedica is one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, delivering outpatient appointments, diagnostic  testing  and eye surgery to change lives through better sight and eye health. We’re  proud to have been certified as a Great Place to Work for the third year  running and  listed among the UK’s top  30  Best Workplaces™ for 202 6  —recognition that reflects how colleagues feel about working here . Our Purpose is to change lives through better sight and eye health, and our Vision is to end avoidable sight loss in every community we serve; we live our values every day—Commercial, Courageous, Compassion, Collaborative and Curious. Role Overview We are seeking a skilled and patient-focused Optometrist to join our Gloucester team on a part-time basis (1–2 days per week), with a preference for Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or Saturday working. Optometrists play a critical role at Newmedica, delivering high-quality clinical care across a range of services. You will primarily run glaucoma follow-up clinics, alongside supporting pre- and post-operative care and triaging patients. The role involves the use of advanced diagnostic equipment to perform detailed clinical assessments, as well as analysing and interpreting specialist diagnostic test results to identify new or worsening eye conditions. This position is offered as an initial 12-month fixed-term contract to provide maternity cover, with a primary focus on glaucoma follow-up clinics. However, depending on your experience and expertise, there may be opportunities to work across additional clinic types. You will provide clear, supportive advice to patients and explain clinical procedures with confidence and empathy. As eye surgery can be an understandably daunting experience, it is essential that you are approachable, compassionate, and able to reassure patients throughout their journey. Working at Newmedica offers a modern, hospital-based environment with strong opportunities for clinical development. You will encounter a wide range of complex and interesting cases, making this an excellent opportunity for a qualified Optometrist looking to enhance their clinical decision-making skills and broaden their professional experience. Skills and Experience To be considered for this role, you must: Be a fully qualified Optometrist (MCOptom, BSc (Hons) in Ophthalmic Optics/Optometry, or equivalent) Hold current registration with the General Optical Council (GOC) The following skills and experience would be advantageous: Previous experience within a hospital eye service or private eye clinic Postgraduate qualifications in Glaucoma and/or Therapeutics Ability to work effectively in a high-volume clinical setting (approximately 18–22 patients per day) Proven experience delivering high standards of specialist optometric diagnostic testing using advanced equipment Experience in training and coaching colleagues A strong commitment to continuous professional development Competence in using clinical IT systems and software Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English A collaborative approach and willingness to support team members as needed What We Offer Competitive salary ranging from £58,100 to £75,300 (pro rata), depending on experience and qualifications 30 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays (pro rata for part-time) Company bonus scheme based on organisational performance and individual objectives Company pension scheme A Comprehensive benefits package Ongoing learning and development supported by a range of training tools and courses A supportive, friendly multidisciplinary team environment dedicated to improving patient outcomes A bright, spacious, and modern workplace designed to the highest standards If you would like an informal chat about the opportunity or to request a job description, please contact [email protected] Our employment offers are subject to receipt of satisfactory pre-employment checks. Applicants must have the right to work in the UK and a Disclosure and Barring Service check will be necessary in the event of a successful application which we will pay for. At Newmedica, we actively promote diversity and equal opportunities, and we are committed to this in both the running of our services and how we recruit our staff. We actively encourage applications from everyone with the essential requirements of the job, regardless of any protected characteristics. Newmedica is fully committed to safeguarding the welfare of all people, irrespective of gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, race, language, religion, ethnic or social origin.
