    "description": "<h2>Overview</h2>\n<p>The Apprentice performs tasks in support of a wide variety of roofer/tinner maintenance activities.  The incumbent performs assigned duties under direction by supervision and journey level shop personnel. Maintains good standing as an apprentice by successfully completing all education and on-the-job requirements as outlined in the department’s Apprenticeship Agreement.  The incumbent follows University rules and regulations at all times.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<h2>Responsibilities</h2>\n<ul>\n <li>As directed, the Apprentice effectively and safely performs a wide range of roofing/tinning tasks, including the repair, renovation, and maintenance of campus buildings and structures, in accordance with the apprenticeship on-the-job training requirements, while working with a journey level mechanic.</li>\n <li>Observes University safety regulations, uses appropriate personal protective equipment, and performs all assigned work tasks in a safe manner. Ensures proper care in the safe use and maintenance of vehicles, tools, and equipment.</li>\n <li>Supplements practical trade experience by attending vocational / technical trade school and hybrid on-line instruction during non-business hours, following the defined program of apprenticeship related educational and instructional courses. (e.g., roofing, sheet metal, blueprint reading, shop math etc.). </li>\n <li>Communicates clearly and effectively with co-workers and management, both verbally and in writing. Maintains and accurate log of daily tasks and effectively utilizes the departmental computerized maintenance management software (CMMS).</li>\n <li>Performs additional assignments which may include overtime, after hours, and special events. Available for emergency call-backs as necessary.</li>\n <li>Follows and abides by the department’s customer service standards.</li>\n <li>When snowstorms occur, the apprentice is an “Essential Employee” who is mandated to assist in the removal of snow and the de-icing of campus walks and steps.</li>\n <li>Performs other duties as assigned.</li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Qualifications</h2>\n<ul>\n <li>Must be able to perform all essential duties in a satisfactory manner.</li>\n <li>Must be a high school graduate or possess an equivalency (GED).</li>\n <li>Possess the ability and technical aptitude to learn the roofing/tinning trade.</li>\n <li>Must possess a clear understanding of the potential occupational hazards connected with roofing/tinning work and the associated safety standards and practices which must be applied.</li>\n <li>Ability to work with supervision and guidance, across the range of trade skills normally encountered by the roofing/tinning trade in a variety of facilities.</li>\n <li>Must be able to successfully complete all educational and on-the-job requirements of the apprenticeship program.</li>\n <li>Ability to safely and effectively work with general types of roofing/tinning trade hand and power tools such as hammers, spudders, hot air welders, metal shears, metal forming and bending equipment, soldering equipment, etc.</li>\n <li>Possess a positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills; work independently and in teams. Possess a willingness to learn all aspects of the trade.</li>\n <li>Must be a self-starter with initiative to understand and learn.</li>\n <li>Must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.</li>\n <li>Must possess a valid, permanent driver’s license and be able to pass a background check.</li>\n <li>Must have the ability to learn computer basics and be able to work with the department’s software programs.</li>\n <li>Must be able to meet the physical requirements listed below.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><strong>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:</strong></p>\n<p>The following tasks and skills that would be necessary for any person to fulfill while working in any of the job classifications within the Roofing/Tinning Shop of the Building Maintenance Department:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>stand or walk up to 2 hours at one time, up to 8 hours per day;</li>\n <li>sit for less than 2 hours during an 8 hour day;</li>\n <li>operates motor vehicles or heavy equipment (e.g., forklift, high reach, cherry picker) occasionally (less than 33% of the workday)</li>\n <li>lift or carry up to 35 pounds frequently (34 – 66% of the workday) and 100 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday);</li>\n <li>lift up to 100 pounds to waist height and up to 35 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead:</li>\n <li>frequently use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing or pulling (34 – 66% of the workday);</li>\n <li>occasionally push or pull with forces up to 100 pounds, reach overhead, lift overhead, crawl, knee stand, lie down, pick or jack hammer (less than 33% of the work day);</li>\n <li>frequently push or pull with forces up to 50 pounds, bend, squat, kneel, climb ladders or stairs, or reach overhead (34 – 66% of the work day);</li>\n <li>work outdoors in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions;</li>\n <li>possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Princeton University is an Equal Opportunity Employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>The University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, work experience, education/training, key skills, market, collective bargaining agreements as applicable, and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
