Description
Block Institute is a Preschool Special Education program for children ages 3-5. We are located in the Bath Beach section of Brooklyn. Our main focus is to educate and ensure the well-being of our students. Within the classroom environment, we are looking for Aides to assist in meeting the educational needs of our students. The position is on a school calendar from 8:30am - 3:30pm, M-F. Block Institute provides a supportive atmosphere in which you will gain experience and knowledge to enhance your career path.
The Block Institute of Brooklyn, New York is a non-profit, non-sectarian agency dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families. Established in 1962, Block Institute has extensive experience providing individualized services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Qualifications
Primary Responsibilities:
Individualized Student Support:
Provide assistance to students during lessons and activities, ensuring active engagement with the curriculum.
Foster an inclusive, nurturing classroom environment that supports each student’s social, emotional, and cognitive growth.
Encourage positive peer interactions and help develop students’ social skills.
Daily Routine Assistance:
Assist students with daily routines, such as arrival, meals, bathroom use, and transitions between activities.
Support participation in group activities, promoting communication and cooperation among students.
Behavioral Support:
Observe and monitor student behavior, utilizing positive management strategies to support classroom expectations.
Collaborate with teachers to address challenging behaviors and provide consistent guidance.
Collaboration and Communication:
Communicate regularly with teachers and specialists regarding student progress and any challenges.
Assist in sharing updates with families about their child’s needs and achievements.
Safety and Supervision:
Maintain a safe and accessible classroom environment.
Supervise students during free play and outdoor activities to ensure their safety.
Follow all health and safety protocols at all times while supervising children.
Instructional Support:
Assist in preparing and organizing instructional materials and resources for lessons and classroom activities.
Participate in emergency interventions and follow school protocols as required.
Other Duties:
Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Education or Education Coordinator, within the scope of the role.
Position Requirements:
High school diploma or GED required.
Experience working with children, preferably in a special education or childcare setting.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate effectively.
Demonstrated patience, empathy, and a passion for supporting diverse learners.
