Department: Student Involvement Time Type: Part time FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Description: Summary: The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is the hub for the student experience at American University. CSI facilitates leadership development, organizational advising, and programs that help foster a sense of belonging for the next generation of changemakers. Our office is home to Student Government, Student Activities Council, Student Media, AU Club Council, Recognized Student Organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life and the Graduate Leadership Council. This position advises and provides support for undergraduate student organizations and student leaders, including event planning, general inquiries, administrative support, and supporting dedicated RSO spaces in the Mary Graydon Student enter. This position will work directly with one or more of the following CSI Governance Cohorts and the student organizations within them, depending on the candidates’ experience and interests and the operational needs of the department: AU Club Council (AUCC) - undergraduate recognized student organizations, Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) - fraternity and sorority chapters and councils, Student Media Board (SMB) - student media organizations, Graduate Leadership Council (GLC) – graduate student government and school councils, AU Student Government (AUSG) -- undergraduate student government and school councils, and the Student Activity Council (SAC) - programming board council and four programming boards. This position would be for a current graduate student enrolled at AU and able to commit to one full academic year. Essential Functions: Advise assigned student organizations and student leaders through training, meeting attendance, and regular 1:1s. Support student organization and student leader policy education, including promoting awareness of the RSO Manual, administrative processes, and university policies. Assist with Center for Student Involvement events including but not limited to Welcome Week and Late Night and Weekend programming, graduate student engagement events, involvement fairs, retreats, trainings, and other CSI and student organization events as needed. Along with CSI professional staff, review and approve events posted on Engage by Recognized Student Organizations. Support administrative processes that support student groups. Assist with marketing efforts as needed. Oversee the function of assigned student group spaces on the 2nd floor of Mary Graydon Student Center. Attend weekly CSI staff meetings. Other duties as assigned. Competencies: Advising and Supporting: Addresses the knowledge, skills, and dispositions related to providing advising and support to individuals and groups through direction, feedback, critique, referral, and guidance. Through developing advising and supporting strategies that take into account self-knowledge and the needs of others, we play critical roles in advancing the holistic wellness of ourselves, our students, and our colleagues. Assessment, Evaluation, and Research: The Assessment, Evaluation, and Research competency area focuses on the ability to design, conduct, critique, and use various AER methodologies and the results obtained from them, to utilize AER processes and their results to inform practice, and to shape the political and ethical climate surrounding AER processes and uses in higher education. Leadership: The Leadership competency area addresses the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required of a leader, with or without positional authority. Leadership involves both the individual role of a leader and the leadership process of individuals working together to envision, plan, and effect change in organizations and respond to broad-based constituencies and issues. This can include working with students, student affairs colleagues, faculty, and community members. Law, Policy, and Governance: The Law, Policy, and Governance competency area includes the knowledge, skills, and dispositions relating to policy development processes used in various contexts, the application of legal constructs, compliance/policy issues, and the understanding of governance structures and their impact on one’s professional practice. Social Justice and Inclusion: While there are many conceptions of social justice and inclusion in various contexts, for the purposes of this competency area, it is defined here as both a process and a goal which includes the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to create learning environments that foster equitable participation of all groups while seeking to address and acknowledge issues of oppression, privilege, and power. This competency involves student affairs educators who have a sense of their own agency and social responsibility that includes others, their community, and the larger global context. Student affairs educators may incorporate social justice and inclusion competencies into their practice through seeking to meet the needs of all groups, equitably distributing resources, raising social consciousness, and repairing past and current harms on campus communities. Student Learning and Development: The Student Learning and Development competency area addresses the concepts and principles of student development and learning theory. This includes the ability to apply theory to improve and inform student affairs and teaching practice. Technology: The Technology competency area focuses on the use of digital tools, resources, and technologies for the advancement of student learning, development, and success as well as the improved performance of student affairs professionals. Included within this area are knowledge, skills, and dispositions that lead to the generation of digital literacy and digital citizenship within communities of students, student affairs professionals, faculty members, and colleges and universities. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: Part-time. 20 hours per week. Hybrid modality. Salary Range: $18.95 per hour. Required Education and Experience: Must have a bachelor's degree and currently be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at AU. Preferred Education and Experience: Experience with advising and leadership development. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Strong organization skills and attention to detail.
