Description Description: Working as a member of a highly collaborative team, the Director of Community Engagement at Juilliard is responsible for providing leadership and administrative direction for an office that supports college students who are learning to bring community engagement into their professional artistic practice. A person who will be successful in this position should have a strong track record of success in arts education or arts administration, be an effective public speaker and presenter, and be adept at approaching programming through a student development lens. This office administers six (6) teaching and performance Fellowships (120-150 Fellowship awards annually) and public-facing educational events in collaboration with multiple artistic and administrative departments at Juilliard (Relaxed Performances, Young People’s Concert series, Community Dance Concerts, Experience Juilliard). The office also works closely with the Alan D. Marks Center for Career Services and Entrepreneurship, which connects students and alumni to professional opportunities and resources through grant programs, an online Career Portal, a gigging service called Hire Juilliard Performers program, an annual Entrepreneurship Symposium, curricular and co-curricular offerings, and one-on-one career advising. The goal of all of these programs is to support Juilliard college students and alumni become communicative, socially responsible artists; to learn to serve the cultural needs of their communities; and to develop agency in their careers. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Community Engagement and Career Services and collaborates with the Director of Career Services, Director of Alumni Career Services, and the Operations Manager for Community Engagement and Career Services. This position oversees a team of direct reports. The position also frequently collaborates across the institution with leadership of the Music, Dance, and Drama Divisions; the offices of Community and Culture and Non-discrimination and Title IX; faculty from all areas; and the Student Development team. Business hours for the office are Monday-Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm. Hybrid schedules are available. The salary range for this role is $91,000-$93,000 per year. Role Responsibilities: Work closely with the Assistant Dean, Director of Career Services, and Director of Alumni Career Services to identify emerging career trends and innovations in the community engagement, career development, and entrepreneurship field(s) relevant to young performing artists Maintain visibility for all Community Engagement programming and resources with students, faculty, staff, and alumni Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations, health care facilities, social service organizations, and schools that serve as venues for Juilliard’s Community Engagement work Creatively adapt the artistic services and resources available through this office to meet client and community organization requests, including high profile or unique events and residencies, through knowledge of both the performing arts and the unique skills of our individual students In collaboration with the Assistant Dean, Program Manager for Community Engagement Performances, Program Manager for the Morse Teaching Artist Fellowship, and other offices, lead the application, implementation, reporting, and assessment processes for all Community Engagement Fellowship programs Curate and lead training sessions to support all Community Engagement Fellows throughout the year Develop thematic programming, select performers, and coach students and professional artists contracted for educational events, such as Relaxed Performances, Experience Juilliard, Dance Community Concerts, and Young People’s Concert Series Serve as a career advisor to college division students and alumni from all divisions Manage and mentor office staff, temp staff, apprentices, and work-study students Serve as a student conduct administrator and appeal officer to adjudicate violations of school policies and aid with conduct appeal reviews as assigned Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree Direct experience in the performing arts (music, dance, and/or drama), arts administration, and/or arts education Highly conversant in issues around social justice, education, and community-based artistry Strong interpersonal, communication and managerial skills and the ability to speak and write effectively to a broad spectrum of individuals and groups, from students to donors Strong computer skills, including MS Office, Outlook Demonstrated commitment to increasing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging through the performing arts and arts education Understanding the mission of the Juilliard School as well as the School’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging Preferred Background: 5+ years of administrative experience in education or student affairs at a college, university, or performing arts institution Experience in directly supervising a team Advanced degree and experience in a performing arts discipline, Higher Education Administration, Music Business, Arts Administration, and/or Arts Education Familiarity with workflow and CRM platforms, such as Airtable, GradLeaders Nondiscrimination Policy: The Juilliard School is committed to a policy of equal treatment and opportunity in every aspect of its relations with its faculty, staff, students, and other members of the Juilliard community, and does not discriminate on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, religion, creed, age, sex, national origin, alienage, ancestry, citizenship, sexual orientation or preference, gender identity, physical or mental disability, medical condition, predisposing genetic characteristics, marital status, partnership status, or any other basis prohibited by applicable local, state, or federal law.
