Position Summary:
The Bus Driver is responsible for the safe operation of Rice University buses and for providing excellent transportation and customer service to the Rice community and visitors. The driver must serve as an ambassador to the Rice community and remain tactful at all times. The driver will provide detailed information to passengers on campus events, parking, building locations, and METRO information as needed. They must stay informed about all university policies and regulations, as well as state and federal transportation and traffic rules.
Workplace Requirements:
On-campus position: This position is exclusively on-site, requiring all duties to be performed in person. Per Rice policy 440 , work arrangements may be subject to change. This role is classified as an essential position, requiring on-site presence to effectively carry out its vital functions.
Hiring Rate: $18.20/hr.
*Non-Exempt (hourly) positions under FLSA are eligible for overtime.
Minimum Requirements:
School bus driving skills and experience interacting with students, staff, and visitors regularly Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate effectively with customers Ability to represent the university professionally Basic computer knowledge Commercial bus driving skills Ability to work with diverse individuals and provide relevant information
Preferences:
High school diploma or equivalent Six months of related bus driving experience Must possess and maintain a Texas Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger endorsement, with no more than three (3) moving violations or at-fault accidents in the past three years, and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) within the past 10 years Ability to operate electronically equipped vehicles Ability to clean and sweep buses
Essential Functions:
Transport university community members and guests Follow safety rules and comply with traffic regulations to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner Provide embarking and disembarking assistance to passengers as needed Maintain order among passengers during trips to ensure safety Provide detailed information to passengers about campus events, parking, buildings, and METRO information as needed Check the condition of a vehicle’s tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure everything is in working order Report any bus malfunctions or needed repairs Maintain knowledge of first-aid procedures Prepare and submit reports that may include the number of passengers or trips, hours worked, mileage, and fuel consumption Perform all other duties as assigned
