Other equipment may be operated on a relief or training basis.  Employees in this class are required to perform a variety of laboring and helper duties.  Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher ranking employee.  Supervision may be exercised over the work of Laborers assigned to the piece of equipment being operated.  The incumbent does related work as required.  \n<strong>Hiring Range: $21.84 - $22.95/ hourly</strong>\n<h2>Key Responsibilities</h2>\n<p> </p>\n<ul>\n <li>Operates motor equipment such as:  tractors (may have rotary mower attached), patrol truck, single axle dump truck, paint truck (stake body), patch roller, front end loaders, compactors, compressors, sewer cleaners, street sweepers, and other types of equipment classified as light duty used in the construction and maintenance of highways, bridge projects, landfills, or recycling operations;</li>\n <li>Operates equipment and participates in material hauling and snow removal activities such as sanding roads, shoveling, etc;</li>\n <li>Cuts trees, weeds, and bushes, and does manual road patching and traffic flagging in conjunction with highway maintenance;</li>\n <li>Performs general cleanup work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass, and assisting in collection of litter from public lands and facilities;</li>\n <li>Occasionally operates heavier construction equipment on a relief or training basis; Assists in the installation of guiderails, posts, and culvert pipes; Performs physical labor such as loading and unloading trucks, digging ditches, cutting trees and brush, picking roadsides, painting, flushing sewers, cleaning culverts, and raking blacktop;</li>\n <li>Uses various hand tools such as chain saws, shovels, scythes, forks, and rakes in performing tasks; Performs minor mechanical repairs on automotive equipment; Services, cleans and oils equipment. </li>\n</ul>\n<p> </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p><strong>Career Path Definitions & Distinctions: </strong></p>\n<p>Motor Equipment Operator I: Good knowledge of the operation and care of the less complex types of construction and maintenance equipment;  Good knowledge of municipal geography;  Ability to service and make simple repairs to equipment;  Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions;  Willingness to respond to emergencies and perform overtime work;  Willingness to work in adverse weather conditions;   Mechanical aptitude. </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Motor Equipment Operator II: Employees in this class operate and perform routine maintenance on intermediate skill level heavy construction/maintenance equipment including trucks requiring a Commercial Driver’s License Class B, used in a municipal highway, landfill, or recycling department.  This class does not involve driving a semi-tractor trailer except on a relief or training basis.  This class differs from the Motor Equipment Operator I position due to the more complex nature of equipment operated and tasked performed requiring greater skill along with increased responsibility for the safety of others.  Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher ranking employee.  Minimal supervisory work is required and is generally limited to Motor Equipment Operator I and Laborer positions.  The incumbent does related work as required.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Motor Equipment Operator III: Employees in this class primarily operate semi-tractor trailer equipment and other high skill level heavy construction/ maintenance equipment used in a municipal highway, landfill or recycling department.  This class differs from the Motor Equipment Operator II position due to the heavier equipment and more complex nature of the equipment operated requiring greater skill along with increased responsibility.  Employees in this class must exercise significant judgment in over-the-road transport of heavy equipment and substances in tank trailers as well as in the operation of various types of heavy trucks and construction equipment.  The work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  Supervision is exercised over Motor Equipment Operator I and II levels.  The incumbent does related work as required. </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Motor Equipment Operator IV: Employees in this class operate complex heavy construction equipment engaged in excavation and frequently act as the work site supervisor of active work sites.  This class differs from other titles in the Motor Equipment Series in that the equipment operated on a regular basis requires the highest level of skill, responsibility and judgment.  The operator must be aware at all times of the special care required when excavation might involve utilities (electric, gas, cable, telephone) or penetrate a landfill line.  Incumbents at this level understand the consequential damages that can occur in underground construction.  The work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  This class serves as a “straw-boss” and as such actively participates in work projects being carried on.  Supervisory responsibilities include job planning and layout of work, insuring that the subordinate staff properly and diligently performs assigned duties, and assembling required materials and equipment.  The incumbent does related work as required.  </p>\n<h2>Education, Experience & Qualifications</h2>\n<p>One (1) year of experience in the operation of trucks and other equipment used in construction.</p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Completion of a two-year training program for heavy equipment operators may be substituted for the above year of experience. </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Eligibility for an appropriate level New York State Driver’s license at time of application and possession of license at time of appointment. </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>Possession of a valid Class B New York State Commercial Learner Permit (CLP) at the time of appointment.
