THIS POSITION REQUIRES WEEKEND HOURS
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (TR) performs therapeutic recreation evaluations and develops appropriate individualized treatment plans for all patients admitted to Moody Neurorehabilitation. The TR provides treatment services to increase patients ability to participate in home and community-based leisure and recreational activities appropriate to their interest and abilities. This may include evening and weekend programming. The TR develops and maintains relationships with other professionals, businesses, and community agencies, for potential patient volunteer placement in the community as well as for community outings. The TR utilizes adaptive equipment as needed to increase functional independence. The TR serves as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team; coordinates efforts with other therapy team members, incorporates interdisciplinary goals into treatments and outings, attends treatment team meetings and other staff meetings as required; completes discharge planning as well as all other required documentation. The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist will uphold the mission, philosophy, and goals of the organization while maintaining strict confidentiality of personnel and client data and information in the performance of assigned duties.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conducts Therapeutic Recreation evaluations and develops appropriate treatment goals.
Assists in the development and implementation of treatment strategies based on client interests and abilities while incorporating carry over of interdisciplinary goals.
Delivers a variety of age-appropriate recreation activities, which fulfill patients social, mental, emotional, and physical needs and interests.
Completes daily notes and monthly notes within periods assigned.
Participates in interdisciplinary rounds, team meetings and IPP ( individual program plan) meetings, communicates effectively with team, patient, and family.
Plans for discharge; recommends appropriate equipment and locates resources in home and community as appropriate. Completes discharge summary, recommendations and provides resources within periods designated.
Follows and implements strategies as developed by interdisciplinary treatment team to increase overall functional independence of patients served.
Assists in day-to-day operation of Therapeutic Recreation department.
Designs and implements therapeutic recreation internship program. Provides supervision to therapeutic recreation students.
Assists with staff training as needed
Carries out duties in accordance with Moody Neuro organizational policies, CARF, HHSC, and other accrediting bodies.
Plans and coordinates patient outings which may include evenings and weekends
Coordinates and directs Therapeutic Assistants activities and duties during outings and evening modules as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
CTRS certification by National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Specialists.
Able to complete appropriate TR evaluation and develop treatment plan for clients.
Knowledge and skills in a wide range of sports, crafts, games, and other recreation activities.
Must be effective and enjoy flexibility in job.
Knowledge of documentation procedures.
Ability to formulate treatment plans goals and objectives for patients.
Have ability to organize and implement an innovative, creative Therapeutic Recreation program.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Knowledge of leisure/recreation related assessment tools.
Current valid Texas Driver's license.
Current CPR and First Aid Certification.
Work evenings and weekends
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from an accredited college or university. Completion of a senior internship.
Experience:
Experience working in clinical setting with persons with disabilities; prefer clinical experience with brain injury rehabilitation and community re-entry.
