Job Coach – Education, Training and Research
Location: Calgary, AB
Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate is Found
Position Status: One (1) Full-time (40 hours/week), One Year Contract (with possibility of extension)
The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is looking for a Job Coach in Calgary, AB. Reporting to the Regional manager, the Job Coach will be responsible for assisting Métis clients to achieve long-term sustainable employment by providing support in developing job search strategies. This position will assist with career decision making, screen clients for job readiness, assess client skills, develop action plans, prepare clients for job search, and match them with appropriate employment. The Job Coach will also assist in managing employment projects and support with trade student and summer student applications and assessments. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual with excellent interpersonal skills and strong organization, time management, and planning skills to work effectively in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Establish rapport, screen clients for job readiness, and provide one-on-one and group assistance to clients looking for employment.
Review labour market information and assist clients in conducting occupational research that identifies and clarifies a suitable career goal.
Work with clients to develop an individual action plan leading to employment and clearly communicate the client eligibility criteria for the options suitable for the client’s employment goals.
Assess skills for clients (i.e. transferable skills, essential skills, and other industry specific skills) and assist clients in tailoring their resumes to different job roles.
Stay current with emerging trends in resume development and interview techniques, prepare clients for interviews, and develop and deliver training sessions on creating effective resumes.
Provide internal referrals if clients choose to upgrade skills through an RLI funding program.
Once a match is made between an employer and the client, provide feedback to the client on the interview process and follow-up to determine if employment is gained.
Liaise with employers to determine skills required for available jobs.
Liaise with organizations, communities, and service agencies to develop community support networks, and deliver information to Métis organizations, community agencies, and employers regarding the Education, Training, and Research department’s programs and services.
Attend meetings in the Indigenous/Métis community, educational institution meetings, and career and information fairs and events.
Actively market the Education, Training, and Research department’s projects and services, and present information to various stakeholders as required.
Develop resources for external referrals for clients with barriers in the region.
Complete the application and assessment for trades students entering the 8-week theory portion required to advance to the next level of their trade.
Complete applications for summer students participating in placements lasting 6 to 16 weeks. This involves short assessment and minimal follow-up until the student returns to school.
Support the administration of the Employment Partnership Program, including conducting assessments, developing action plans, and providing monthly case management throughout the placement, which typically runs up to 26 weeks.
Support MTE Advisors in the management of caseloads, as required.
Manage short-term employment projects from initiation through completion, such as the Woman in Microbusiness and Entrepreneur Project.
Enter all client information, employment outcomes, interventions, comments, and other pertinent information in the Client Database following the steps required in KETO Manual. Set Bring Forwards (BF’s) in Client Database to maintain monthly (or more) contact with clients.
Ensure hard copies of all files contain accurate and up-to-date information, with all file activity documented in file summary notes.
Query data and prepare reports and statistics as required. Advise the manager of trends, client needs, and potential training projects required in the region.
Actively participate in the annual regional planning process.
Other duties as required or assigned.

Effective time management, planning, and multi-tasking skills, with the ability to work within set deadlines, manage high caseloads, and deal effectively with various demands.
Excellent assessment and facilitation skills, with the ability to apply effective employment counseling techniques and build workshops for job search clients.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills and a proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external shareholders.
Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle and maintain confidentiality for sensitive or private information. Adherence to privacy legislation.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Strong professionalism, problem solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
Strong sense of cultural and political sensitivity and awareness, with a genuine interest and respect for a diversity of people.
Proficient in office software applications, such as Microsoft Suite, and Google Workspace, and willingness to learn new software programs.
Qualifications
Certificate, Diploma, of Degree in Humanities, Social Services, Career Development or related field.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role related to employment services.
Understanding of labour market trends, employment supply and demand, occupational requirements, and the job loss cycle.
Knowledge of education programs/institutions, and community resources providing support to clients with barriers.
Experience or exposure networking with industry, employers, and community partners.
Knowledge of Métis culture and barriers to sustainable employment; knowledge of challenges and socio and economic factors facing Indigenous individuals, particularly Métis.
Other Requirements
Ability to work a regular schedule of 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday.
Ability to work evenings and weekends, as required.
Ability to travel throughout Alberta, as required.
Reliable transportation to and from the office.
Submission of a clear and Police Information Check.
