FARM NUTRITIONIST
Fresh Air Camps | Hudson Valley, NY | June 15 – August 15, 2026
Since its founding in 1877, The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit youth development organization, has
provided free life-changing summer experiences in the outdoors to more than 1.8 million children from
New York City’s underserved communities. Young people also participate in year-round leadership.

The Fresh Air Fund also owns and operates the Sharpe Reservation which houses five of the six Fresh
Air Camps, the Sharpe Reservation Environmental Center which serves over 18,000 visitors each year.
The Fresh Aid Fund also operates Camp Junior, a camp for young people from the Bronx in Harriman
State Park.
Life as a Farm Nutritionist:
The Farm Nutritionist plays a key role in delivering high-quality nutrition-based culinary programming and ensuring a safe, engaging camp experience for all participants. The Farm nutritionist
develops lesson plans and teaches six one-hour periods daily , based on nutrition, while using produce from the Farm's garden area. The ideal candidate is a hardworking person, enjoys teaching youth, has a curious mind about the outdoors, and a background in
nutrition or food service, and an interest in learning more about farm animals or gardening.
This position requires living on-site at camp from June 15 to August 15, 2026. Compensation for this role is $2,800 for the summer. Shared housing and meals are provided. The role is fully in person and reports to the Farm Director .
What You’ll Do :
Create and conduct one-hour classes that emphasize and make connections to in-season foods with the importance of diet and good health as well as connecting the food campers to eat to where it originated from. Oversee daily morning breakfast programs and occasional dinner programs that utilize farm products from the farm garden and/or local farms. Maintain the daily sanitation and food safety measures of the nutrition center. Oversee other farm staff to ensure they comply with safety measures of the program area, including basic sanitation, equipment operations, proper food handling, and other operational hazards. Oversee food ordering and inventory. Ensure the safety of the campers while in the program area. This includes safe use of specialized equipment such as knives, appliances, etc. Participate in caring for the animals and maintaining the garden at the farm. Participate fully in all assigned camp activities. Understand that campers come first, and decisions should be made in the best interest of campers. Address stressful situations appropriately in a fast-paced, interactive environment. Strive to work cooperatively with fellow staff to achieve the program's goals. Explain and enforce the policies, traditions, and rules of camp. Invest time with campers to meet their needs, challenge their capabilities, and serve as a role model during their time at camp. Take ownership of the use and care of camp equipment and facilities. Be familiar with emergency procedures and follow them when necessary. Additional responsibilities as needed and assigned.
What We’re Looking Fo r :
Must be at least 18 years of age by the start of camp. At least two years of college or equivalent with coursework in nutrition is strongly preferred. ServSafe Food Handler's certification preferred A minimum of one year of experience working with children is required. Staff must be passionate about working with children. Must have teaching experience in this area and prior experience with cooking, planning, and ordering food. You should also have a basic knowledge of nutrition and the benefits of healthy eating, with some knowledge of food justice issues. Interested in working and living outdoors for the summer. Emotionally mature with a willingness to work as a team player. Flexible, willing to accept challenges and step outside comfort zone. Able to maintain a positive attitude. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk, or hear. Able to regularly lift and/or move equipment and supplies weighing 20+ pounds. Comfortable with being exposed to wet, humid, and hot conditions. 14. Available for the entire duration of the summer program. As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and to protecting the participants we serve, The Fresh Air Fund requires all camp staff to meet applicable vaccination requirements in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, and to be fully vaccinated against polio, MMR, TDap, and varicella (and Hepatitis B for Health Care staff). As new public health issues arise, The Fresh Air Fund may require additional vaccinations. Proof of vaccination or an approved exemption will be required as a condition of employment.
Compensation & Perks:
Compensation for this position is $2,800 for the summer.

Available for the entire duration of the summer program.\n As part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace and to protecting the participants we serve, The Fresh Air Fund requires all camp staff to meet applicable vaccination requirements in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, and to be fully vaccinated against polio, MMR, TDap, and varicella (and Hepatitis B for Health Care staff). As new public health issues arise, The Fresh Air Fund may require additional vaccinations.
