Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Our MISSION is to help ensure the security of the United States and its allies by providing high-hazard experimentation and incident response capabilities through operations, engineering, education, field, and integration services and by acting as environmental stewards to the Site’s Cold War legacy. Responsibilities
Seeking self-motivated Fire Protection Engineer skilled in providing detailed fire alarm and detection engineering designs, fire modeling, fire hazards analysis, exemptions, equivalencies, analysis, and associated construction oversight for installation of designs for the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS).
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for supporting design projects over their entire life cycle (initiation, planning, design, executing, and closeout). Provide detailed design packages (drawings, specifications, calculations, reports, etc.) in support of equipment procurement and construction of fire protection systems. Typical projects would include, but are not limited to analysis of existing/new facilities to determine design requirements/deficiencies, create, and analyze fire modeling as needed to support egress analysis, ventilation performance, tenability, perform fire hazard analysis, perform fire protection assessments, perform analysis of systems, and prepare exemptions or equivalencies as needed, support fire alarm and detection design efforts, support fire suppression system design efforts, etc. Devise solutions to highly complex technical problems of broad scope. Solutions may require resolving conflicting customer expectations, code requirements, and design requirements, utilizing unconventional technology and materials, and cross-disciplinary integration. Serve as mentor to less-experienced engineers and provide practical advice on implementation of organizational goals. Responsible for preparation and checking of design drawings, specifications, calculations, system design descriptions, design analyses, fire hazards analyses, fire protection assessments, equivalencies, and exemptions; must be experienced in fire modeling, fire barrier design, and life safety design features. Demonstrate expertise in fire suppression systems, fire modeling, fire barrier design requirements, fire detection and alarm systems, and life safety design features. Identify risk and design features to prevent, control, and mitigate the effects of fire. Perform and review hydraulic calculations with the use of computer software, such as Hydraulic Analyzer of Sprinkler Systems. Identify fire scenarios, model, and evaluate results with the use of computer software, such as PyroSim, CFAST, and Fire Dynamics Simulator. Proficient with Notifier fire alarm and detection systems Provide support for beneficial occupancy inspections. Review team’s processes and deliverables comply with laws, codes, orders, and MSTS policies and procedures. Research and interpret codes, standards, and DOE orders on a daily basis. Coordinate with multiple engineering disciplines, as well as the Authority Having Jurisdiction, fire marshal, and facility manager. Knowledge of applicable National Fire Protection Association codes and standards, International Building Code, International Fire Code, DOE orders and standards, and Code of Federal Regulations. Perform other duties assigned by Management.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) required for Fire Protection, Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees; Or, Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering; Or, for Architects, Certification from the National Council or Architectural Registration Board (NCARB); Or Professional Engineer license Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized. Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Department of Engineering complex working as Fire Protection Engineer is preferred. Minimum 3 years’ experience in Fire Hazards Analysis and Fire Protection Assessments for Nuclear Facilities is preferred. Minimum 3 years’ experience in performing fire model analysis is preferred. Experience in fire protection for underground facilities or experience with nuclear facilities is highly preferred. The primary work location will be at the Losee Road facility in North Las Vegas, Nevada. Work at the Nevada National Security Site (located 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada) may be required up to 50% of the time in support of these functions. Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change). Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Must possess a valid driver’s license. MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required.
