Description of Job Duty: The candidate will be classified as faculty on a nine-month contract with an expectation of summer administrative responsibilities with commensurate remuneration. The chairperson will oversee a growing department, which offers a major in Sociology (with concentrations in Criminology/Criminal Justice, Sociology, or Social Work) and a major in Political Science (with concentrations in Legal Studies or Political Science). The department will launch a Master of Social Work degree in fall 2027. The extramural research portfolio of the department’s faculty is strong, including association with several research and clinical centers, such as the Center for Addiction Prevention and Support, the Center for Assessment and Improvement of Learning, the Center for Energy Systems Research, and the Center for Management, Utilization and Protection of Water Resources.
Responsibilities
Essential Functions: The selected candidate will provide leadership and vision for a dynamic Department of Sociology and Political Science. The candidate will oversee the academic, personnel, fiscal and public affairs of the department. Responsibilities include budget and fiscal management; annual evaluation of faculty; supervision of departmental staff; recruitment and retention of faculty and students; management and improvement of curricula; course scheduling; faculty, staff, and student development; program assessment and review; service on departmental, college, and university-level committees; representing and advocating for the department. The chairperson is exemplary in teaching, research, and service.
Physical Demands: Those typical to perform the job duties listed.
Special Instructions: All applicants will be required to electronically upload a letter of application, curriculum vitae, pedagogical philosophy, research plan, copies of transcripts (official transcripts for all degrees conferred required upon hire), and email contact information for three professional references. References will only be contacted to provide a reference letter if the candidate is selected for interview. Initial review of applications will begin January 15, 2026; position open until filled. Submission of materials is the applicant’s responsibility. Applications without all required materials will be deemed incomplete and will not be considered. Candidates selected for a campus interview must provide all available teaching evaluations for courses taught.
Salary:
Commensurate with education and experience. Eligible for tenure upon appointment pending TTU Board approval.
Benefits Information:
Benefits include the accumulation of one (1) sick leave day per month and thirteen (13) University holidays. Other benefits include medical and life insurance (shared cost with the university), retirement, optional 401k, and educational benefits. Deferred income and benefits over 12 months.

The candidate must be eligible for appointment at Tennessee Tech as a Professor (or advanced Associate Professor) of Social Work, Sociology, Criminology or related field. The selected applicant must have demonstrated previous leadership experience, scholarly accomplishment, and a strong commitment to teaching excellence and active learning teaching pedagogies. Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the building and sustaining a culture of collaboration is expected.
