Description Summary : The Industrial Firefighter/Engineer position requires skills and abilities in driving and operating fire apparatus, properly positioning apparatus, operating pumps, securing water supplies, combating and extinguishing fires, performing rescues, providing emergency medical services (EMS) as assigned, conducting fire/safety inspections and education, participation in training programs as well as station, vehicle and equipment checks/maintenance. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responds to emergency and non-emergency service requests according to Department policies/procedures. Requests include, but are not limited to, structural fires, vehicle accidents, hazardous materials, spills or releases, forcible entries, alarm investigations, rescue and salvage operations, extrication, confined space rescue, water rescue, and high-angle rope rescue. Attends department training programs to include fire prevention, suppression, rescue, emergency management, EMS and other related skills or duties as directed by the Fire Chief. Safely operate fire department apparatus during emergency responses and daily activities. Perform daily checks and maintenance on apparatus and equipment to ensure operational readiness. Performs assigned shift activities to include equipment checks, apparatus checks and safety inspections. Identified problems are to be immediately reported. Performs duties in a safe manner and reports any unsafe or unusual activity and conditions to supervisors. Completes necessary reporting and duties prior to the end of assigned shift. Completes project assignments and performs assigned areas of responsibility as directed and within a timely manner to meet or exceed deadlines. Acquires and retains a thorough knowledge of the service area, interior and exterior, to include streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items. Will be available for recall as determined by the Fire Chief. Performs all related work as assigned. Will respond to EMS medical calls as assigned. May assist in the planning and evaluation of Department facilities, apparatus and equipment. May be assigned duties to assist with public education, public relations and the promotion of a positive safety culture within the areas assigned. Performs and/or assists in keeping work areas, equipment and apparatus in a clean and orderly condition. Participates in emergency preparedness planning. Provides recommendations and supporting documentation to the Fire Chief for department improvements. Must be able to drive assigned vehicles in accordance to NorthStar’s driving policies. Will adhere to NorthStar’s and Department specific Standard Operating Procedures. Serves as a leader for the personnel assigned to the engine and may serve as the acting Company Officer if required, directed, or the situation dictates. Performs other related duties as directed by superiors. Qualifications Minimum Qualifications Must be at least 21 years of age High school diploma or GED Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with fellow employees, hospital staffs, fire departments, rescue squads, police departments, comm. Centers, management, volunteer fire departments and the general public. Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to handle conflict situations with good judgment, professionalism and courtesy. Certification as Firefighter 2 NFPA 1002 Ch. 4 or equivalent Emergency Vehicle Driver Training or Apparatus Operator (AO) Certification. NFPA 1002 Ch. 5 or equivalent Fire Department Pumper Operations 1 Pass a background check. Successfully complete the departments physical agility requirements. Must complete IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and IS-800 within 1 month of hire. Preference given to Firefighters who are an EMT Basic, Advanced or Paramedic. Must be CPR certified. May be required to meet additional site-specific requirements. Driving Requirements: Must be at least 21 years old Valid Driver’s license. Must pass Motor Vehicle Records check Meets NorthStar’s insurance requirements to drive company vehicles. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful ability to complete the departments physical agility requirements including, but not limited to walking, climbing, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, and maintaining balance over less than ideal terrain. Must have good physical stamina and endurance, measured by the ability to undertake, without adverse effects, lifting, carrying, and balancing loads in excess of 125 pounds (250 pounds with assistance), climbing ladders and stairs while carrying equipment/tools, lifting/carrying and pulling hose lines, lifting/carrying required tools and equipment. Must have the ability to see different color spectrums. Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20 in at least one eye. Must have good eye-hand coordination and sufficient manual dexterity to manipulate equipment, instrumentation, and medications. Must be able to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings in human physical conditions by using visual, auditory, olfactory, and tactile observations. Must be oriented to reality. STRESS FACTORS: Frequently: Intense tasks, busy environment. Constantly: High pressure. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Occasionally: Extended day. Available for immediate recall, as needed. Constantly: While performing the duties of this job the employee may work outdoors. This may include exposure to wet, humid, hot, and inclement weather conditions. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts, under hazardous, life-threatening conditions, such as, but not limited to, heights, confined spaces, temperature extremes, crowds, loud noises, limited visibility, in the presence of hazardous materials, in the presence of victims of death and/or dismemberment. The employee must work effectively as a team member and/or leader of a fire company, communicate professionally with peers and superiors, one-on-one and in groups. MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Frequently: Analyzing, decision making. Constantly: Simple reading and writing, high math and writing skills, clerical, memorization, perception/computation, problem solving, simple math skills, judgment, reasoning. EQUIPMENT USED: Occasionally: Tablet computer, computer, keyboard, stapler, 3-hole punch, sharpener, calculator. Biomedical equipment Frequently: Telephone, cell phone, Fire and EMS medical equipment. PUBLIC RELATIONS: Participates actively in public awareness and community educational programs. Maintain professional appearance of the approved uniform, maintains hygienic and grooming standards. Work on special projects as delegated by management staff.
