In this role you will: Set up, operate, monitor, test, dismantle and clean dialysis related equipment for patient treatments according to established procedures; Prepare for dialysis, observe and report concerns to nursing staff; Perform minor maintenance of related equipment as per user manual, order and stock supplies, clean equipment and maintain a safe, clean environment; Transport patients as required, and as directed by nursing staff; Demonstrate renal dialysis equipment and procedures as required; Provide input into development of orientation materials; Performs clerical duties as needed. What You Bring Education: Grade 12, plus two years recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Skills and Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to deal with others effectively. Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position. Your Day to Day: Prepares for patient treatment by gathering required equipment, supplies, and information such as patient chart and prepares dialysis equipment for patient treatment by performing duties such as attaching tubing, calibrating and checking alarms, and setting monitors and dialysate flow rates. Tests dialyzer and related equipment and components. Documents information related to technical procedures on patient chart as required. Prepares therapeutic plasma exchange equipment for patient treatment by performing duties such as attaching tubing, calibrating and checking alarms. Sets up, maintains and monitors equipment during dialysis in clinics, hemodialysis, and various other settings, and responds to alarms during patient treatment and informs the nursing staff. Explains alarm response procedures to patients. As directed, and in conjunction with the RN/LPN, assists in preparing the patient for dialysis, repositions the patient as necessary and attends to patient comfort needs. Demonstrates renal dialysis equipment and procedures as required. Under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Leader or RN/LPN, supports continuity of patient care by ensuring call bell is within reach of patients, and reporting observations, concerns or related problems to designated nursing staff in a timely manner. Assists in maintaining a clean and safe work environment by attending to hazardous spills and/or minor spills as per unit policy and disposing of workplace hazardous materials and sharps in accordance with established procedures. Cleans equipment such as wheelchairs, IV poles and supply carts in order to maintain a tidy environment and ensures equipment and supplies are safely stored. Performs general cleaning according to unit schedules, and as needed. Demonstrates, maintains, and follows procedures related to infection control practice. Participates in Quality Assurance programs, provides input into the development of relevant written operating procedures and attends in-service training programs, unit reports and staff meetings as required. Transports patients as required to other units, clinics or facility entrance/exits for transportation, and under the direction of nursing staff supports patients who require minimal assistance to transfer independently. Transports dialysis equipment to appropriate areas of the facility for patient treatment. Conducts dialysate water testing in accordance with established procedures and replaces pyrogen filters on dialysis equipment as required. Performs initial troubleshooting of equipment problems or concerns and reports to the Biomedical Technologists or Clinical Nurse Leader or designate when necessary. Works with Biomedical Engineering Department to report alarm conditions relating to water treatment systems and dialysis equipment. Performs related clerical duties such as answering the telephone, filing, photocopying, taking and relaying messages and assisting in maintaining standardized records. Orders and stocks supplies as established by quotas or as required by nursing staff. Performs a variety of duties such as picking up or dropping off specimens, patient charts or equipment to designated areas of the facility. Performs other related duties as assigned.
