Description
The University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) invites applications for Lecturer in Linguistics for the 2026–2027 academic year. In this role, faculty will teach an in-person section of Introduction to Linguistics (ENG 121). Topics include language universals (what all languages have in common), language and society (how language reflects society/culture), language as a physical/psychological phenomenon (how we produce and comprehend language), how language works (the internal structures of sounds, words, phrases, and sentences), and language acquisition.
Salary & Benefits
Part-time faculty members are compensated on a per-credit-hour basis, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and in accordance with the Maine Part-Time Faculty Association (PATFA) contract. Per-credit-hour basis rates start at $1,211. To view the Credit Hour Rates for AY 2026, please refer to the PATFA Contract .
Teaching opportunities in future semesters are based on course funding, performance, need, and availability. Continuation is subject to the terms of the PATFA bargaining agreement and other applicable University policies.
Eligible part-time faculty members may elect certain benefits provided by the University of Maine System.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Curriculum Development: Design and maintain syllabi aligned with departmental expectation and established course blueprints. Instructional Delivery: Lead lesson planning and facilitate instruction via Brightspace LMS or other instructional software. Because UMF utilizes various
instructional modalities (including synchronous and asynchronous online instruction), instructors must have consistent access to a reliable computer (laptop with appropriate amounts of processing speed) with a webcam, microphone, and robust high-speed internet to effectively deliver coursework via the Brightspace LMS. Student Support: Maintain regular correspondence, hold office hours, and provide timely grading and feedback. Professional Collaboration: Attend course coordination meetings with the Associate Dean of Graduate Education and complete required orientations and trainings.
Required Qualifications:
Education: Master's Degree in English, Linguistics or a closely related field. Academic Preparation: Demonstrated academic background adequate for the courses to be taught.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching Experience: At least two years of teaching experience (in-person, online, and/or hybrid) at the college level.
