Collins is seeking a highly motivated Project Engineer for Highway Design services to play a key role on our team in Norwood, MA, office. The ideal candidate will have experience in highway/transportation focus who can bring creative problem-solving skills balanced with the ability to develop a strong design background. This position will have the ability to work on contracts with MassDOT, MBTA, RIDOT, or NHDOT, liaise with clients and government agencies, and participate on design teams. The Project Engineer performs higher level assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities, requiring application of standard and moderate engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. Typical Duties and Responsibilities: Prepares and designs plans for site grading, drainage, paving, utilities, and highway for public and private sector clients. Contributes significantly to projects of all sizes. Prepares hydrology, earthwork, and highway plans and profile evaluations. Assists in collecting due diligence information and preparing concept site engineering plans. Contributes significantly to the preparation of engineering reports, plans, and specifications. Prepares submittals to State, Municipal, and other agencies. Applies judgement on design decisions and selects from standard engineering techniques and alternatives. Makes independent decisions within a general framework and work within agreed upon timelines and budgets. Keeps Project Engineer and Project Manager informed of workload and any changes in project scope or additional services. Interacts with other departments and offices in order to coordinate work. Is active in technical societies. Responsible for small to moderately difficult projects from inception to completion. Has some communication with clients. Is available to attend meetings or events outside of normal working hours. Directs and supervises the work of entry-level engineers, technicians, drafters and administrative staff. Actively observes and acts in an appropriate manner related to safety. Qualifications Education and/or Experience: Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) or Professional Engineer (P.E.) Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited four-year university, plus appropriate continuing education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant highway, interchange, and highway design experience. Familiarity with MassDOT guidelines and standards is highly desirable. Familiarity with the procedures and methodologies published in the major national guidelines (e.g., AASHTO & MUTCD). Hands-on design experience including all of the following: corridor or intersection modeling, construction details, note generation, plans production, quantity take-offs, and cost estimation. Working knowledge of transportation engineering, highway design, multimodal and Complete Streets design, intersection planning and design, pedestrian and bicycle safety, and a general understanding of the project delivery process. Experience with drainage design, intersection control evaluations (ICE), road safety audits (RSAs) and other studies, multimodal studies, and roundabout peer reviews. Preferred project experience includes highway reconstruction, roundabouts and other intersection types, shared-use paths, separated bike lanes, signing and striping plans, signal design plans, and construction traffic control plans Proficiency with at least one highway design software including Autodesk Civil 3D Bentley OpenRoads, InRoads, or GEOPAK, AutoTURN, and cost estimating programs. Civil 3D experience is preferred but not required.
