NY/NJ Support Supervisor, Center for Outdoor Learning and Leadership New York, New York, NY, US Salary: $ 25 (USD) Hourly The Appalachian Mountain Club’s (AMC) Center for Outdoor Learning and Leadership (COLL) is seeking a seasonal Logistics Supervisor based in the New York/ New Jersey Area to support the operations of our outdoor programs based in Blairstown, NJ, Gateway National Recreation Area in NYC, and Harriman State Park, NY. This position is offered at 35 hours/week, available from 5/03/21 - 11/26/21. Program Summary: Inspired by the principles of the Civil Rights movement, Educators Outdoors (formerly known as YOP) was founded in 1968 to offer outdoor experiences to youth-serving organizations in the City of Boston. Now in our 53rd year, our model to train and support teachers and youth development professionals to lead groups outdoors has grown throughout New England and the Greater New York City area. As we look to the next 50 years, we envision a future where more youth enjoy the outdoors and where outdoor participation is reflective of every community, with equitable access for all. General Responsibilities: One of the most sought-after benefits of our program is the opportunity for the trained educators to borrow outdoor equipment at no cost for their youth group. In 2019, 126 outdoor experiences were supported with gear loans. The Logistics Supervisor is responsible for providing access to outdoor equipment for program members and their youth groups, recruiting and training volunteers, staffs and partners, coordinating the equipment to be accessible for all member-led trips and supporting our Outdoor Leadership Trainings and Professional Development Workshops. The Logistics Supervisor communicates with members about their gear needs and oversees gear preparation, returns, clean-up and overall inventory management. The Logistics Supervisor will create a new structure supported by volunteers to increase our capacity to offer gear to more groups. Working as part of a dynamic team, the Logistics Supervisor will work both independently on projects and collaboratively with staff to support the following areas: - Tracking the inventory of three “Gear Libraries” based at the AMC Mohican Outdoor Center, NJ; the Corman AMC Harriman Outdoor Center, NY; and Ecology Village at Gateway National Recreation Area, NYC for usage, repairs, and replacement of damages. - Coordinating the issuing and de-issuing of outdoor equipment from the previously mentioned Gear Libraries. - Communicating with members regarding equipment request expectations and follow-up. - Executing and coordinating efficient packing and cleaning of gear: sleeping bags, tents, backpacks, pots and pans, stoves, boots, socks, etc. - Maintaining a shared calendar of events for each gear library in collaboration with volunteers, AMC Outdoor Centers and site partners - Recruiting, onboarding and supervising volunteers - Training volunteers, AMC Outdoor Center and site partners in gear issuing and maintenance best practices. - Updating member information on the program database - Travel and overnight at our facilities is expected, and will require driving to the gear libraries. Qualifications: - Dedication to AMC’s mission to make the outdoors accessible to youth living in under-resourced communities - Personal commitment to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice - Professional or personal experience in managing outdoor equipment and logistics for trips - Ability to work a varied schedule. Some weekends, evenings and overnights are required. - Up-to-date computer skills and a willingness to learn and utilize Social Solution’s Efforts to Outcomes database system. - Success in performing a variety of duties with careful attention to detail. - Strong organizational skills and systems for assisting with gear. - Effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment - Self-directed with demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects at once - Must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid driver’s license. - Successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background and driving record check consistent with state and federal laws. - Physical abilities needed: Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds Employee Benefits: - Health insurance with a generous employer contribution is available to employees hired for 30 or more hours/week for a period of six months or longer. - Employees accrue sick leave at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 40 hours of sick leave per calendar year. - Use of AMC facilities, free and discounted rates - 30% discount on merchandise sold at our facilities and in AMC catalogs - Free AMC membership; including AMC Outdoors magazine and a 20% discount on lodging - Free outdoor gear loans To Apply: Now accepting applications until Wednesday, April 24th!
