Description

Overview Fulfill all school nurse functions as needed in a special education environment in an appropriate and professional manner. Responsibilities STANDARD 1: Implementation of regulations. Overseeing regulatory requirements for school. Completes NYS DOH immunization survey yearly. Monthly DOH communicable disease reports. Safekeeping medication needed to be taken by children; dispensing medications as per direction on prescription, tube feeding, catheterizations. To administer oxygen when needed, nebulizer treatments, ostomy care and bronchial pumps. Develop and implement appropriate strategies for intervention as per child’s IEP or IFSP. Complete and maintains all required paperwork in an appropriate and timely manner. STANDARD 2: Student Care. Prioritize and implement daily student care within program utilizing nursing theory and knowledge of program function. Plan and implements staff education, as needed, on a variety of nursing and health care topics within program, seizure management, choking, educating staff on anaphylaxis and allergies. Adhere to standards of care guidelines and procedure protocols. STANDARD 3: Record Keeping. Record keeping of student physical and medication orders updated yearly and when needed. Completes and document all first aid treatments and exposure to communicable disease. Tracking and documentation of immunization records, health history, medical authorization and medical information. Participate in the daily attendance procedure. Call home after 3 days absence and alert School District (school age students) if absent 5 days. STANDARD 4: Department Management. Maintain nursing office and equipment. Order and replenish office medical supplies. Monitor Private Duty Nurses. STANDARD 5: Professional Behavior. Cooperate and conduct self at all times in a professional manner appropriate to special education. Adhere to specific program policies and procedures. Perform other related duties as assigned. Appropriate Nursing attire. STANDARD 6: Professional Development. Maintenance of nursing expertise via participation in continuing education. Attend outside conferences and workshops. Attend and participate in supervision and implement recommendations accordingly. STANDARD 7: Coordination with management and peers. Appropriately and tactfully directs staff in the necessary implementation of health care, universal precautions, etc. Collaborate with peers and supervisory staff in an appropriate manner. First aid for staff members and documentation. Complete injury forms as required for students and staff. Maintain student confidentiality. Perform related duties, as required. STANDARD 8: Adhere to general policies of the organization/regulators including: Code of Ethical Conduct. Emergency/disaster preparedness protocols. Fire/Safety prevention protocols. Departmental in-service education program requirements. Policies and procedures (attendance, punctuality, appearance, professional attitude, etc). Communicate with physicians, hospital, parents, outside agency staff and social worker regarding medical status students. Make referrals to appropriate health/medical specialists according to procedure. Job related self-development education activities. Infection control practices and procedures. Complete PPD on all staff on a yearly basis and all newly hired staff. Offer Hepatitis B vaccine to staff. STANDARD 9: Perform other related duties, as required. Demonstrate understanding of the needs of children and visitors for each specific group. Address safety and psychological needs of the special age groups, as appropriate, in the performance of work activities. Address the special needs of special groups, hearing impaired, physically challenged and various issues relating to program and facility. Maintain child and family confidentiality. Is consistently courteous and considerate, in person and on the telephone, in interactions with children and others such as family, visitors, vendors, and other employees. Demonstrate compassionate, caring and respectful behavior towards the children, family and visitor. Exhibit the “At Your Service” attitude, i.e., smiles, uses positive eye contact, and is friendly, open and approachable. Respond quickly to child and/or significant other’s refers to appropriate member of the care team, if necessary, and informs supervisor of actions taken. Promote positive co-workers relationships, teamwork and cooperation. Works collaboratively and is respectful of others. Take individual responsibility for providing outstanding Service Quality. STANDARD 10: Cultural Competencies Demonstrate the ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultures, ranges of disability, genders, ethnicity and races. Demonstrate the ability to recognize and manage personal behaviors to create an inclusive, equitable and welcoming environment. Demonstrate the ability to successfully deliver culturally responsive services to students and families. Qualifications Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the NYS Office of the Professionals Minimum one (1) year experience working with pediatric population (infancy throughadolescence). Knowledge and experience in Broviac, Shunt and Ostomy Management, respiratory treatment including neubulizer, medication administration, emergency medical care and seizure management required. Physical aspect may include but are not limited to lifting and transferring of a student.
