Description

This is an 8 week position of 35 hours/week at $20/hour Since 1975 The Mustard Seed Street Church has been essential in fighting hunger and restoring faith to our community in Greater Victoria. Our operations are nearly 100 percent community funded and include Vancouver Island's largest and most accessible Food Bank; daily meals, coffee, and snacks; Hospitality programs; and a Food Security Distribution Centre. We offer church services and community building faith-based programming, as well as pastoral care for those seeking a place to belong and grow spiritually. Through these core programs we assist over 5,000 people each month with the help of more than 50 daily volunteers and many generous financial supporters! The Event Coordinator will support The Mustard Seed’s Development Department in planning, promoting, and delivering community events, food drives, and fundraising initiatives. This position offers a valuable opportunity for a student to gain hands-on experience in event coordination, marketing, communication, partnership development, and community engagement—all while contributing to programs that support individuals and families experiencing poverty and food insecurity. Working under the guidance of experienced staff and alongside volunteers, donors, and community partners, the youth in this role will develop practical workplace skills, increase their confidence, and gain meaningful experience in the nonprofit sector. Key Expectations: Event Planning and Logistics Assist with the planning and coordination of seasonal and annual events, including community food drives, fundraising activities, donor appreciation events, and the Fair Start for Kids Back-to-School program.- Contribute to event setup, on-site operations, and tear-down in collaboration with staff and volunteers.  Help organize timelines, task lists, and checklists to support smooth, well-organized event delivery. Support event logistics such as preparing materials, helping coordinate schedules, arranging transportation, booking spaces, and ensuring event requirements are met. Community and Donor Engagement Engage with community members, donors, local businesses, schools, and faith groups to encourage participation in food drives and campaigns. Assist with donor relations by helping prepare thank-you messages, follow-ups, and hospitality during events. Represent The Mustard Seed at outreach activities by sharing program information and welcoming participants. Support external groups hosting third-party fundraisers by providing promotional materials and logistical guidance. Campaign Support and Promotion Assist in promoting summer campaigns, community fundraisers, and corporate food drive initiatives. Help create simple digital and print promotional materials—including social media posts, posters, and event notices—under staff supervision. Collect photos, videos, and stories during events to support donor stewardship and organizational communications. Maintain tracking sheets and help prepare timely updates for the Development team. Partnership and Community Relationship Building Support staff in strengthening partnerships with local businesses, service clubs, community organizations, and event sponsors. Assist with scheduling and coordinating site tours of the Queens Avenue Food Bank and Viewfield warehouse to engage donors and partners. Teamwork, Learning, and Professional Development Participate in team meetings, planning sessions, and training opportunities related to event management, nonprofit fundraising, communications, and community engagement. Work collaboratively with the Development, Communications, and Volunteer teams to support integrated event activities. Share ideas and feedback to help improve events, enhance donor engagement, and support The Mustard Seed’s mission. Gain exposure to key areas of nonprofit operations while developing transferable skills such as communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and time management. The Mustard Seed Street Church is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive workplace and encourage applications from people of all backgrounds and lived experiences.
