Job Description Judicial Processing Specialist $39,309.00 - $58,964.00 *DOE +$1 per hour worked in environmental pay *All job-related experience must be included on the resume portion for it to be considered in the salary offer. For Benefits information click HERE JOB SUMMARY Works closely with state and federal agencies to ensure an individual’s constitutional rights have been appropriately met during admission to a correctional facility until their time of release. Performs a variety of routine and complex clerical duties to maintain comprehensive up-to-date criminal records, accurately interpret court documents to carry out the court’s orders which impact the detainee’s civil liberties, and safeguards against the unlawful detention of detained individuals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Two (2) years of closely related experience such as clerical, customer service, administrative, detailed support, or supervisory (assistant) duties.Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.Successful completion of Judicial Processing Specialist (JPS) formal training within six (6) months of hire. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Works with arresting officers, detainees, court personnel, and state and federal agencies. Generates official legal records as well as updates those records as new information is received. Reviews Law Enforcement probable cause affidavits for accurate content and submits complete affidavits to the appropriate judge for determination in accordance with state law. Processes court orders in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner, certifying they meet all legal requirements while honoring confidentiality. Determines appropriate court and jurisdiction for all charges, warrants, commitments, detainers, holds, and jail release agreements. Sets and processes bail, bonds, and fines. Processes the timely release of detainees from custody, notifying all applicable departments, agencies, and organizations that are unique to each detainee. Conducts regular audits of all official legal records, ensuring the accurate status of all cases. Processes requests for releasing detainees to court appearances, transfers between jails and prisons, court-ordered appointments, and transfer of custody between state and federal entities. Safeguards against any unlawful detentions by ensuring detainee’s records are accurate and up to date. Conducts initial and on-assessments for detainees utilizing objective jail classification principles. Responds to detainee requests, grievances, and appeals. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA) Knowledge of: Criminal Justice System General judicial processes Warrants, court commitment records, detainers, and legal documentation Record Management Systems Criminal Justice organizations Sheriff's Office and Jail policy and procedures Sheriff's Office, state, and federal computer databases related to job-specific duties State and federal laws about the arrest, detention, and release of a detainee and/or prisoner Skills and Abilities to: Proficiently operate in a technologically-driven environment with intermediate to advanced computer skill Perform basic math calculations Access and interpret a variety of documents contained in local, state, and federal record systems using independent judgment Independently review official legal records and court documents to confirm a detainee is being held lawfully Verify accuracy and validity of legal documents generated for detention, incarceration, and release of prisoners, as well as changes in charges, bail amounts, and court dates Research and analyze records for conflicting or missing information and work with the courts for clarification Effectively use communication and customer service skills with a demonstrated ability to professionally interact with colleagues and prisoners of various social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds Maintain confidentiality of records and information Follow verbal and written procedures and instructions Manage time effectively and transition between multiple tasks Demonstrate attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage competing priorities Communicate effectively and concisely, both verbally and in writing Function both independently and within teams Obtain and maintain BCI certification Work under pressure and meet deadlines WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Lift items up to 20 pounds and up to four (4) feet from the floor onto a cart or shelf. Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended lengths of time. This position works in the Salt Lake County Jail (which is a locked-down facility), has direct contact with prisoners, and may be exposed to stress because of human behavior in a jail environment. IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION Positions in the jail require 24-hour coverage of working shifts that may be rotational, including day, swing, and graveyard. May be required to work holidays, nights, and weekends as needed.
