Job Description: Wellness Center Coordinator & Expeditionary Programs Gear Coordinator Overview The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research, and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for, and redesigning how education is delivered. Job Summary The Island School is seeking an experienced Paramedic or EMT to join our onsite medical team and help provide first aid, urgent, and emergency medical care to our community members. This position will also work as an aid in coordinating and transporting injured or sick persons to definitive medical care as needed. The ideal candidate will have experience working within a team of medical, mental health and risk management professionals and will carry current qualification as a Paramedic, WEMT, and/or EMT-A. Located on the Island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, the Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) operate year-round offering educational programs to clients of all ages. Educational programs involve students, following an academic curriculum that involves SCUBA, sailing and kayaking programs along with a rigorous physical activity schedule. In addition, students and staff are actively involved in marine research and education involving corals, turtles, sharks etc. In coordination with the Wellness Team, the EMT provides education and training for staff and students as well as acute and long-term care for this population ranging in age from newborn to 90, with the largest majority of the patient population being teens. Care is also provided on occasion to the communities of South Eleuthera on a larger scale in conjunction with local physicians, and clinics. Eleuthera is a remote island with limited medical resources. The nature of the care and work we do reflects this challenging yet exciting environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities ● Works as part of a small medical team that consists of a Paramedic or RN, EMT, and a robust community of WFR and WAFA-trained faculty to oversee the wellness, safety and health management of CEIS students, activities and staff ● Ensures quality health services to the CEIS community, including students, staff, interns and wider community members as needed ● Responds to emergencies that occur on campus or during off campus activities and leads response efforts, including direct patient care, response coordination, and evacuation ● Provides daily first aid, urgent, and emergent medical care needs to the community ● Observes, documents, and reports patient conditions/injuries, treatments, and care measures as appropriate ● Liaise with and keep parents, and other relevant stakeholders informed of students’ medical conditions, treatment and future needs ● Work with Wellness Center Team to conduct pre-trip medical form review and meetings with parents / guardians of all students ● Coordinates with Telemedicine and/or local clinics as needed to provide appropriate care and treatment for patients ● Provides education to CEIS community members on safety and health and wellness, through a combination of group in-services, new staff orientation, email communication and individual teaching as needed as well as helping coordinate annual wilderness medicine courses with our outside provider ● Leads/assists in site-specific medical and risk management training and education, which may include basic First Aid and CPR training, community wide emergency response scenarios, and skills refreshers ● Maintains onsite medical room, equipment, and supply inventory ● Conducts bi-weekly checks and maintenance on the School ambulance ● Participates in an on-call schedule with other medical personnel for after-hours emergencies ● Maintains current licensure and certifications as needed for the position ● Semester and Summer Term support: ○ Oversee expedition gear inventory and repairs with the support of members of the educational teams; provide recommendations for ordering ○ Maintain organization of expedition gear before and after kayak trips ● In collaboration with the Director of Risk Management, support organization-wide risk management initiatives including, but not limited to, managing incident data, submitting incident report forms (IRF’s) and updating other key risk management documents ● Support Island School educational programming as assigned ● Other duties as assigned by your manager Schedule This is a full-time, contractual position. Your working hours will be five (5) days per week in addition to being part of the weekly medical on call rotation with 1 - 2 other Wellness Center Staff. This role requires a variable, mission driven schedule and will require periods outside of normal working hours. The Island School and its related entities operate year round. Evening and weekend work is required for this position. Schedules for onsite and on-call availability will be coordinated within the medical team as needed for appropriate coverage and time off. Special events will require periods of time outside of normal working hours when staff must be on site for extended periods. The successful candidate should expect and desire to work a variable and mission-driven schedule. Licensure ● Actively holds licensure as a Paramedic, EMT-A, EMT-B, and/or WEMT Registered with Bahamas Health Professions Council (or register prior to position start date) ● Certifications Required: ○ BLS ● Certifications Preferred: ○ ACLS, ○ PALS, ○ MHFA/YMHFA, ○ Instructor in CPR/First Aid, ○ Lifeguarding, ○ WFR, and/or WAFA Experience ● Experience in providing medical care in a remote/wilderness setting is preferred ● Proven collaboration and leadership experience, both managing and working within teams ● Experience contributing to protocols and upholding standards that support the program’s mission while mitigating inherent risks ● Prior experience with adolescents is a plus ● A working knowledge of dive and sports medicine Communication Skills ● Proficiency with English ● Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills ● Must maintain patient confidentiality ● Timely communication, both written and verbal, with parents and teaching staff Computer Skills ● General proficiency in Google suite and database operation Adaptability ● Able to survive and thrive in a tight-knit community located in a remote part of The Bahamas We are a Bahamian equal opportunity employer, and preference will be given to suitably qualified Bahamians.
