Description
The Surgical Technology Faculty member will provide instructional education through didactic, laboratory, and clinical modalities and support the administrative and supportive needs of NWCC and the Surgical Technology program. The faculty member will foster a professional learning environment that reflects the values of the surgical technology profession and prepares graduates for national certification and entry-level employment.
The Surgical Technology Faculty member works with the Surgical Technology Director, the respective Campus Deans, the Dean of Health Sciences, and other NWCC administration. The faculty position is appointed by the Dean of Health Sciences and holds the office subject to reappointment. The appointment is for a 12-month period and requires that the position's responsibilities be carried out throughout the entire period. This position supports the mission of Northwest Mississippi Community College by providing high-quality instructional experiences that prepare students for entry-level practice as Surgical Technologists.
Qualifications:
Must hold current Surgical Technology Certification (CST) issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or TS-C (NCCT). Must have a legal active status to practice in the state of Mississippi and must:
Graduation from a surgical technology program accredited by an appropriate accrediting body is required. A minimum of an Associate's Degree is required; a Bachelor's Degree in Surgical Technology or a health-related field is preferred, and candidates holding a Master's Degree are strongly encouraged to apply.
Have five (5) years of clinical experience working as a Surgical Technologist or surgical room experience; or three (3) years of experience as faculty in a surgical technology program; or an equivalent combination of clinical and academic experience as approved by the Dean of Health Sciences
Satisfy clinical agency requirements (if responsibilities include direct clinical supervision of students), including background checks, immunizations, CPR/BLS certification, drug screening, and other requirements as specified by affiliated clinical sites
Demonstrate knowledge of and commitment to standards nationally recognized in surgical technology education and the surgical profession.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain healthcare-specific requirements such as CPR/BLS certification, TB testing, and criminal background checks to satisfy the requirements of affiliated clinical agencies.
Attend monthly meetings of the various campuses and participate in program advisory committee meetings as applicable.
Assist with the admission and selection process.
Participate in curriculum development, review, and revision in alignment with ARC/STSA Standards and Guidelines and current surgical technology competencies.
Consolidate submissions for new items or changes to program goals, objectives, outcomes, curriculum, documents, policies, procedures, facilities, equipment, and support activities from the various campuses.
Conduct classroom, laboratory, and clinical instruction using evidence-based educational practices and appropriate simulation technology.
Provide academic advising and student support services; assist in retention efforts and refer students to appropriate college resources as needed.
Evaluate student performance through formative and summative assessments; maintain accurate and timely grade records in accordance with college policy.
Supervise and evaluate students during clinical rotations; maintain documentation of clinical competency verifications and affiliate site requirements.
Maintain current knowledge of surgical technology practice, educational methodology, and accreditation standards through ongoing professional development and continuing education.
Participate in college committees, departmental meetings, advisory boards, and community engagement activities as assigned.
Utilize the college’s Learning Management System (LMS) effectively for course delivery, communication, and student assessment.
Maintain documentation required for programmatic accreditation, including annual reports, self-study materials, and outcome data.
Other duties as determined by the Dean of Health Sciences.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand for extended periods, demonstrate surgical techniques in the laboratory setting, lift and handle surgical equipment and supplies, and perform other physical activities associated with surgical technology instruction.
