Sleepaway Camp - Staff & Unit Life Manager
Are you passionate about leading, organizing, and creating amazing experiences for youth? Join us as a staff member at Camp Conowingo! We are located in Conowingo, Maryland on 600 acres of wooded land near the Susquehanna River. At camp you will guide campers through activities, foster an environment of belonging, and get to spend time in community while connecting with nature.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervise, train, and mentor camp staff, providing guidance and support to ensure they perform their duties effectively and in alignment with camp policies. Manage staff schedules, rotations, and duty assignments, including any changes, and ensure appropriate coverage and completion throughout various camp activities and facilities. Enforce safety protocols and procedures, including emergency action plans, health, and hygiene standards, and compliance with regulatory requirements; assist in the implementation of regular safety drills and training for staff. Address conflicts or issues among campers and/or staff promptly and effectively, maintaining a positive and supportive camp environment; act as a mediator and resource for conflict resolution. Maintain open and transparent communication with camp support staff, general camp staff, volunteers, caregivers, and campers regarding daily activities, special events, and any concerns or developments that arise. Conduct collaborative performance evaluations for staff, providing constructive feedback and identifying areas for improvement; implement strategies for staff development and recognition. Manage administrative tasks, including record-keeping, inventory management, and reporting; ensure all necessary paperwork, such as incident reports or medical forms, are completed accurately and on time, and the proper channels are notified when incidents arise. Exemplify a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and excellent decision-making skills for staff to emulate.; encourage and foster a culture of respect, teamwork, and enthusiasm among the team. Regular check-ins and coaching with Unit Leaders and Unit Counselors. Adapt swiftly to ever-changing situations, from helping campers overcome fears to handling unexpected weather shifts; embrace challenges with a positive attitude, thriving in a fast-paced, adaptable work environment. Champion the values and vision of the Girl Scouts program, fostering a supportive community and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Assist in planning, conducting, and/or participating in pre-camp training, post-camp clean-up, staff meetings, and in-service opportunities, as well as post-season review. To supervise all Unit Leaders in their efforts to provide participants with a quality camp program experience. To assist with placement of staff to units. Completes additional responsibilities as needed to support program operations. General Qualifications for all Camp Staff:
Embrace a flexible role. Being flexible and adaptable is essential at camp. Ability to work with diverse groups of adults and campers. Willingness to work as part of a team, work in partnership, take initiative, and follow directions as the situation requires. Enthusiasm for nature and able to live in a rustic environment. Time Commitment:
This is a seasonal role that requires living on-site for the duration of the appointment.
Includes paid staff training.
Staff will also have two hours of scheduled time off daily and one day off per week (usually Saturday).
