The Director of Literacy (K–5) is a central office leadership role responsible for driving a coherent, evidence-based literacy strategy across all elementary campuses. This position ensures alignment across curriculum, instruction, professional learning, coaching, and data systems to improve teacher practice and student literacy outcomes. The Director of Literacy will lead network wide planning and implementation of structured literacy practices grounded in the science of reading and aligned to high quality instructional materials. Please see the available salary scales: FPCS Compensation Responsibilities Strategic Leadership and Program Coherence • Lead the development and execution of the kindergarten through 5th grade literacy strategy across the network, serving as the lead of CLSD K-5• Chair the districtwide Literacy Leadership Team (LLT) and ensure alignment across schools • Ensure coherence across Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III literacy systems, including curriculum, assessment, intervention, and professional learning • Oversee implementation and fidelity of evidence-based literacy programs and instructional practices Data Analysis and Continuous Improvement • Analyze network and campus-level literacy data, including DC CAPE, MAP, DIBELS, and intervention outcomes • Identify schools and student subgroups requiring targeted support • Lead data-driven decision-making cycles to monitor progress and adjust strategy • Report regularly on literacy performance and progress to executive leadership Coaching and Talent Development • Supervise ELA Specialists and Reading Specialists to ensure aligned coaching and instructional support • Collaborate with Master Teachers of Literacy and Reading Coaches to strengthen job-embedded professional learning • Design and lead differentiated professional development aligned to structured literacy and HQIM implementation • Build internal capacity for high-quality literacy instruction across all campuses MTSS and Intervention Alignment • Partner with the Director of MTSS to design, implement, and monitor literacy interventions • Ensure alignment between core instruction and intervention systems • Support schools in using data to match students with appropriate Tier II and Tier III supports Curriculum and Resource Management • Oversee implementation of adopted literacy curricula and instructional materials • Ensure fidelity to scope and sequence and instructional expectations • Manage literacy-related budgets, including grant-funded initiatives • Coordinate allocation of resources to schools based on identified needs Qualifications • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in education, literacy, or related field preferred • Minimum 5 to 7 years of experience in literacy instruction, coaching, or school leadership • Deep knowledge of structured literacy and the science of reading • Experience with high quality instructional materials and curriculum implementation • Strong data analysis skills and experience using assessment systems such as MAP, DIBELS, or similar tools • Demonstrated ability to lead adult learning and manage teams • Experience working in urban schools and with diverse student populations preferred Core Competencies • Strategic thinking and systems leadership • Instructional expertise in elementary literacy • Data driven decision making • Strong communication and collaboration skills • Ability to drive change and ensure accountability across multiple campuses FPCS’s policy is to provide equal employment opportunity to all qualified applicants and employees regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, genetic information, veteran status, status as a special disabled veteran, or any other protected criteria as established by federal, state, or local laws.
