Description

Position Description The Director of Athletics Development is the main fundraising officer for Biola University's NCAA Division II Athletics programs. He/she is responsible for raising funds for athletic-related campaign projects, individual athletic teams, serves as the Director of the Eagles Athletic Association, and oversees the Athletics Board - a group of outside supporters with affinity to specific teams. He/she secures corporate sponsorships for the above-mentioned projects as well as for annual facility sponsorships. He/she assists with major events such as the Athletics Year-End Gala, the annual Athletics Week of Giving and team fundraising events. The position has a dual reporting function with direct reporting to the AVP for Student Development/Senior Director of Athletics and a strong dotted-line relationship to the Vice President for University Advancement. Primary goal: Securing outside financial support for the Athletics Department to support facility development, the continual growth in student-athlete experience, and other athletics needs with the vision of branding Biola University as a premier NCAA Division II institution academically and athletically to make an impact for Christ. Alignment with Theological Positions The person who fills this position must be someone who personally agrees with Biola’s Articles of Faith and Statement of Biblical Principles and who is supportive of the positions taken by Biola as contained in its Eschatology Teaching Position. As such, this person may not speak against or act in a manner inconsistent with these positions during the course of their employment at Biola. Department Athletic and Advancement Departments Supervisor This position reports to the AVP/Senior Director of Athletics. Educational Requirements A Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of fundraising-related experience. Work Requirements 40 hours/week, 12 months per year This position requires in-person attendance at Biola’s campus in La Mirada, California, with consideration for a limited hybrid/flexible work arrangement. Responsibilities 1. Eagles Athletic Association: Responsible for an annual fundraising goal of $50,000 to support the general Athletics fundraising account. This support is primarily raised through written appeals and corporate sponsorships. 2. Individual Teams Fundraising: Train 13 head coaches of 17 teams in fundraising and partners with them in establishing goals and activities for individual teams. Responsibilities include providing coaches with relevant lists of alumni/donors, writing/editing letters, maintaining donor and alumni databases, assisting with fundraising events for individual teams, and helping to coordinate activities with Advancement. Annual goal will be $10,000 per team in this area, with the potential to greatly expand that goal when there are university approved facilities fundraising projects or other large-scale needs. 3. Comprehensive Campaign: Carries primary responsibility for developing, executing, monitoring and raising funds for campaign-related Athletic projects, currently including Athletic Scholarships and specific capital projects as approved by the Cabinet, making adjustments as needed. This will be approximately $4 million dollars of support over a 5-7 year period. In addition to Athletics responsibilities in the Campaign, the Director of Athletics Development will work collaboratively with University fundraisers when donors are identified who have capacity to support the University in addition to Athletics. 4. Corporate Sponsorships: Responsible for securing $50,000+ annually in corporate sponsorships not only for aspects of the campaign but also for annual facility sponsorships (i.e.; baseball field, softball complex, soccer field, pool, gymnasium and tennis courts), website/live stream sponsorships and game program advertisement. 5. Athletic Endowments: Responsible for helping secure additional funding to grow existing Athletics Endowments as well as working in conjunction with the Athletics Leadership Team to identify and secure funding for appropriate new endowments to support the Athletics program or individual teams. Goal in years 1-3 will be to fund three new endowments at a minimum of $50,000 each. 6. Athletics Week of Giving: Co-chair the annual AWOG event, with particular emphasis on securing corporate sponsorships for challenge gift awards with an annual sponsorship goal of $100,000+ to drive an annual goal of $500,000+ raised during the week of the event. The Director will work collaboratively with University fundraisers to ensure this goal is exceeded. 7. Athletics Gala: Assist with the implementation of the annual Hall of Fame ceremony at the Athletics year-end Gala. Work to secure 1-2 title sponsors for the event. 8. Spiritual Development: Will participate in the spiritual growth, development, care, and support of employees assigned near this position. 9. Donor Cultivation and Relationship Engagement: Complete an average of 15 to 20 meetings per month with potential donor prospects and potential athletic funding groups, making introductions with head coaches and the athletic director to partner in sharing the vision for Biola Athletics. 10. Other Duties: Assist in coordinating various projects as assigned by the Athletic Department and Advancement Division. Expectations 1. Attend all Athletics staff meetings and sit on the Athletics Administrative team. 2. Meet monthly with the AVP/Senior Director of Athletics. 3. Meet monthly with the Director of Annual Giving. 4. Attend bi-monthly fundraising training with the Advancement team and bi-weekly staff meetings with University fundraisers. 5. Office located in the Athletics area. 6. Solicit major gifts for the Athletics priorities annually and long term that align with the vision of the specific donor. Major Gift Solicitations/Proposals annually = 75. 7. Raise $500,000 or above annually for Athletics in current and deferred gifts from donors and sponsorships. 8. Attainment of Performance Goals and Assignments. 9. Cultivate strong relationships with the Donor Portfolio. 10. Attend athletics competitions as able (minimum one per team annually) to connect directly with student-athletes, coaches, and athletics administrators to engage with the programs. 11. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications 1. Written Communication Skills: This position requires drafting correspondence, proofreading correspondence for spelling, grammar and content errors, and performing other tasks requiring a high level of written communication skills. The position also involves database input and management. 2. People Skills/Fundraising Skills: Qualified individuals must possess 3-5 years of proven success in athletics fundraising. Strong interpersonal and relational skills are required. 3. Decision Making/Judgment: The responsibilities of this position typically involve considerable planning ability, decision-making and evaluation of projects/assignments regarding a variety of procedures, plans and schedules. 4. Other Skills and Abilities: The successful candidate will have a winsome personality, fearless in regards to approaching businesses and individuals to secure financial support for the Athletic programs of Biola University. 5. Collaboration: This role is highly collaborative with a variety of coaches, Athletics staff, and University Advancement staff. The successful candidate will be a team player and will understand how to support a variety of priorities.
