    "description": "<h2>Overview</h2>\n<p>Performs complex maintenance and repair services of the hospital’s physical plant; equipment, buildings and properties.  Duties may include one or more of the following areas:  mechanical, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or HVAC.  Operates and maintains stationary gas and oil fired boilers and auxiliaries in supplying hot water and steam for other power generating purposes.  </p>\n<p> </p>\n<p>This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of AHMC and Whittier Hospital Medical Center. It is expected that the employee demonstrate behavior consistent with the core values of AHMC- WHMC. The employee shall support WHMC- Whittier Hospital Medical Center’s strategic plan and goals and direction of the performance improvement plan.  The employee will also be expected to support all organizational expectations including, but not limited to; Customer Service, Patient’s Rights, Confidentiality of Information, Environment of Care and AHMC-WHMC initiatives.</p>\n<h2>Responsibilities</h2>\n<ul>\n <li><p><strong>Consistently applies infection control policies/practices.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Understands and practices standard precautions for self and others in patient care activities.</li>\n   <li>Understands and practices appropriate disease-specific isolation.</li>\n   <li>Appropriately handles and disposes of sharps (i.e., needles, etc.) as required.</li>\n   <li>Ensures sterility of supplies and equipment.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Meets population/age specific competencies per unit specific addendum.</strong></p><p> </p><p><strong>Attends department specific education/training, in-services, and staff meetings.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Attends mandatory in-services/educational/training activities.</li>\n   <li>Submits all required paperwork on time.</li>\n   <li>Verifies, by signature/initials, attendance at staff meetings or reading of staff meeting minutes.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Participates in department specific performance improvement project.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Actively assists in unit performance improvement monitoring.</li>\n   <li>Knows and understands PDCA Model for Performance Improvement Program.</li>\n   <li>Demonstrates understanding of performance improvement principles in job performance.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Provides a safe and sanitary environment for patients, family, staff, and self.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Performs complex plumbing, electrical repair, steam fitting and general maintenance.</li>\n   <li>Services equipment by lubricating, cleaning, replacing parts, and making minor adjustments.</li>\n   <li>Performs building maintenance requiring carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or HVAC.</li>\n   <li>Operates and maintains repairing of boilers, refrigeration units, air conditioning units, ice machines electronic and pneumatic controls.</li>\n   <li>Understands and able to safely operate and repair all central plant equipment, including, but not limited to boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps and compressors.</li>\n   <li>Performs electrical installation and maintenance.</li>\n   <li>Understands the operation of electrical motors, controllers and related electrical equipment.</li>\n   <li>Is able to wire and install standard 110 and 220 volt outlets.</li>\n   <li>Understands refrigeration system and chilled water systems. Is able to vacuum out system, reclaim freon, and add freon to refrigeration systems.</li>\n   <li>Test runs emergency generators and understands the operation of transfer switch.</li>\n   <li>Performs plumbing installation and maintenance.</li>\n   <li>Understands and able to perform preventive maintenance of all equipment as assigned.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Performs preventive and routine maintenance responsibilities.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Initiates work requests for building and equipment repairs.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal interaction with patients, visitors, nurses, physicians, and other associates.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Accepts direction from Nursing Director and Nursing Care Manager on assigned unit.</li>\n   <li>Consistently communicates in a manner that demonstrates a positive and cooperative attitude.</li>\n   <li>Observes patient confidentiality.</li>\n   <li>Utilizes appropriate and professional body language.</li>\n   <li>Completes any required reports legibly.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Exhibits behaviors that are consistent with AHMC-Whittier Hospital Medical Center's customer service expectations.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Exhibits the service behaviors of AHMC-WHMC, resulting in exceptional hospitality service.</li>\n   <li>Demonstrates consistent positive and timely communication with internal and external customers.</li>\n   <li>Handles problems in a professional and proactive manner.</li>\n   <li>Demonstrates teamwork, cooperation and responsiveness.</li>\n   <li>Greets all people in a courteous and cordial manner.</li>\n   <li>Communicates effectively in person and on the telephone.</li>\n   <li>Ability to resolve difficult situations with customers who may at times exhibit frustration or anger over the telephone or in person.</li>\n   <li>Demonstrates flexibility in adjusting schedule to meet customer needs.</li>\n   <li>Uses appropriate judgment and problem-solving skills to meet customer needs.</li>\n   <li>Responds to all emergencies within the unit and follows up with appropriate actions.</li>\n   <li>Projects a professional appearance and practices good hygiene.</li>\n  </ul><p><strong>Practices safe work habits at all times and are alert, concerned and constantly aware of possible safety hazards.</strong></p>\n  <ul>\n   <li>Wears appropriate protective clothing and uses proper body mechanics.</li>\n   <li>Satisfactorily completes all safety education in-services.</li>\n   <li>Proactively identifies safety issues, resolves and/or offers suggestions for improvement.</li>\n   <li>Handles and uses chemicals appropriately.</li>\n  </ul></li>\n</ul>\n<h2>Qualifications</h2>\n<ul>\n <li>Must have minimum of five year's experience in construction, carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, or HVAC.</li>\n <li>Must have demonstrated experience, proficiency, and expertise (or license) in one or more of the above areas.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge in computer energy management systems.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge in various mechanical hand held tools required in the performance of the trade.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge of power equipment, drills, saws, pneumatic tools, compressor, airless sprays.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge of pumps and pumping system.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge of scaffolding and ladders.</li>\n <li>Working knowledge of trucks and forklifts.</li>\n <li>Ability to read, write, comprehend and communicate effectively.</li>\n <li>Previous experience within the healthcare industry preferred.</li>\n <li>Computer skills preferred.</li>\n <li>Ability to interact effectively with patients, customers and associates in a way that exhibits superior integrated customer service and teamwork.</li>\n <li>Excellent listening and verbal communication skills.</li>\n <li>Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy while directing co-workers.</li>\n <li>Ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.</li>\n <li>Excellent organization and problem solving skills.</li>\n <li>Ability to work within defined time constraints.</li>\n <li>Ability to take initiative and follow through.</li>\n <li>Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.</li>\n</ul>",
