We are seeking an experienced and dedicated individual who will step in to the Family Birth Center Nurse Manager role. The Family Birth Center Nurse Manage r is a registered nurse leader who supports the mission, vision, and values of Santiam Hospital through operational oversight, clinical leadership, staff development, regulatory compliance, and the delivery of safe, high-quality obstetric, newborn, and family-centered care.
The Family Birth Center Nurse Manager is accountable for the day-to-day operations of the Family Birth Center, including staffing, clinical practice standards, quality outcomes, patient experience, team engagement, and collaboration with medical staff, nursing leadership, and interdisciplinary partners.
The Family Birth Center Nurse Manager is expected to maintain clinical competency and provide direct patient care when needed to support safe department operations during high-acuity, high-census, emergency, or short-staffing scenarios.

What You’ll Do
The Family Birth Center Nurse Manager provides operational and clinical leadership for the Family Birth Center. This role is responsible for ensuring safe staffing, supporting high-quality clinical care, maintaining regulatory readiness, developing staff competency, and fostering a professional practice environment.
The manager is expected to be visible, approachable, accountable, and actively engaged in department operations. This position requires strong clinical judgment, leadership maturity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to balance staff advocacy with organizational priorities.
Essential Duties
Oversee daily operations of the Family Birth Center.
Supports safe, evidence-based care for labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum, and newborn patients.
Provides direct patient care when needed to support safe department operations, including high-acuity, high-census, emergency, or short-staffing situations.
Maintains clinical competency to serve as a bedside resource, assist with patient care, support staff decision-making, and respond to urgent or emergent Family Birth Center needs.
Balances leadership responsibilities with clinical support expectations when department conditions require additional licensed nursing coverage.
Ensures staff compliance with hospital policies, clinical standards, regulatory requirements, and documentation expectations.
Supports staffing plans, scheduling practices, productivity expectations, and appropriate resource utilization.
Provides leadership presence through rounding, coaching, follow-up, and direct engagement with staff.
Participates in recruitment, onboarding, orientation, competency validation, retention, and performance management.
Promotes professional development and supports staff growth through feedback, education, and mentoring.
Reviews quality data, safety events, patient feedback, and department trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
Partners with providers and interdisciplinary teams to improve care coordination, communication, and patient outcomes.
Supports emergency preparedness and readiness for obstetric, neonatal, and unit-based emergencies.
Maintains readiness for regulatory surveys and internal audits.
Leads or participates in department-based initiatives, process improvement work, and hospital committees.
Addresses staff concerns, patient concerns, and operational barriers in a timely, objective, and professional manner.
Models Santiam Hospital values and promotes a respectful, inclusive, and accountable team culture.
Qualifications
What You’ll Need
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
Bachelor of Science in Nursing required.
Current unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse license.
Current BLS certification required.
Current NRP certification required or obtained within required organizational timeframe.
Current fetal monitoring education/certification required or obtained within required organizational timeframe.
Demonstrated progression in nursing leadership, including charge nurse experience, clinical coordination, supervisory responsibility, or equivalent leadership accountability.
Demonstrated clinical competence in obstetric, postpartum, and newborn care sufficient to support bedside care, staff coaching, and safe escalation of concerns.
Ability to function as a clinical resource and provide direct patient care within the Family Birth Center when operational needs are required, including high-acuity situations, high census, emergency response, or short-staffing scenarios.
Knowledge of obstetric, newborn, and postpartum nursing standards of care.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, staff, providers, and leaders.
Ability to lead teams through change, support accountability, and promote a culture of safety, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
Working knowledge of regulatory, quality, and patient safety expectations applicable to inpatient obstetric and newborn care.
Ability to participate in hospital orientation, leadership development, and ongoing educational requirements.
Preferred:
Minimum of three years of healthcare leadership experience.
Prior leadership experience in labor and delivery, postpartum, newborn care, women’s services, or a Family Birth Center setting.
Certification in obstetric, perinatal, maternal-newborn, or nursing leadership specialty.
Experience with quality improvement, regulatory readiness, staff scheduling, performance management, and interdisciplinary care coordination.
Master’s degree in nursing, healthcare leadership, business, or related field.
Physical Requirements
The Family Birth Center Nurse Manager must be able to meet the physical and emotional demands of a clinical leadership role, including:
Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment involving patients, families, staff, and providers under stress.
Ability to provide direct patient care as needed, including during periods of high census, high patient acuity, emergency response, staffing shortages, or other operational needs.
Ability to remain clinically competent and physically capable of supporting labor, delivery, postpartum, newborn, and recovery care workflows.
Ability to perform moderately demanding physical tasks, including walking, standing, sitting, bending, reaching, lifting, and assisting with patient care activities as needed.
Ability to lift up to fifty pounds and assist with patient movement, transfer, or repositioning in collaboration with other staff.
Ability to perform fine motor skills, including grasping, pushing, pulling, typing, documentation, and use of clinical equipment.
Ability to hear verbal communication, telephone conversations, fetal monitoring alerts, call lights, alarms, and emergency notifications.
Visual acuity sufficient to read clinical documentation, electronic health records, fetal monitoring tracings, medication labels, equipment displays, and patient assessment findings.
Ability to tolerate exposure to blood, bodily fluids, hazardous materials, infectious materials, cleaning agents, and other routine clinical environment risks.
Ability to respond calmly and effectively to obstetric, neonatal, and unit-based emergencies.
Ability to work variable hours as needed to support department operations, staff, and patient care needs.
