Description This competition is open to all applicants however; internal candidates and applicants who were former employees of the University of Alberta will be given priority consideration before external candidates. Please log in to verify your internal candidate status. Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, including the School of Mining and Petroleum Engineering (CEE+MP), aims to maintain its position among the top schools in North America. With a present complement of almost 70 faculty members, research in the Department is vigorous and covers all major areas of Civil, Environmental, Mining, and Petroleum Engineering. Our graduate program attracts outstanding students from the best schools worldwide and presently has an enrollment of over 500 students, including approximately 200 PhD students. The undergraduate programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mining Engineering, and Petroleum Engineering enroll close to 1000 students. Reporting to the CEE+MP Technical Services Manager (TSM), this role provides technical support for undergraduate Engineering labs, and support for all aspects of research and commercial testing activities in the Department. An extensive knowledge of instrumentation is required to succeed in this role. Supported teaching/research areas may vary but could include Petroleum, Mining, Structural, Construction, Geotechnical, and Environmental Engineering. This role requires an individual who craves knowledge and needs to be continually challenged. More specifically, the successful candidate will be required to train from researchers, from other technicians, from outside organizations, and independently to develop the skills required to support assigned projects/labs. While supporting any of the above activities, safety will be prioritized above all else. All technicians working for the Faculty of Engineering have a duty to operate in a safe manner and to always be on the lookout for unsafe practices that can be corrected. Responsibilities Complex custom test setup design, setup, instrumentation, data acquisition. Correspond with external manufacturing services as necessary for any custom equipment required. Setup, maintenance, repair, and replacement of research/teaching equipment, as well as the purchasing of any associated parts or consumables using U of A purchasing systems. Work with instructors/techs/TSM to develop an understanding of concepts involved, continually improve the quality of student labs, and train TAs as they change from semester to semester. Train for and safely operate a large variety of equipment as dictated by assigned responsibilities, including (but not limited to) permeability testing units, coring machines, machine tools, a variety of test frames, concrete batch plant, cranes, forklift, etc. Contribute to department safety and compliance by actively participating in the Faculty's safety culture and maintaining any necessary documentation pertaining to teaching, research, or commercial activities that are overseen in this role. Other duties as required, such as specialized training, waste disposal using university systems, student project group support, participation in outreach activities (e.g. open houses), etc. Qualifications Education & Compliance Technical Diploma: Instrumentation Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a closely related field. Driving Requirements: Valid Alberta Class 5 (non-GDL) driver’s license. Must be able to provide a 3-year driver’s abstract with no more than 6 demerits and/or 2 moving violations within the last 24 months. Professional Experience Instrumentation: Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience in a multi-disciplinary environment. You must demonstrate a knowledge of a variety of sensors for complex data acquisition (DAQ) tasks. Project Diversity: Proven experience adapting measurement strategies to projects or industrial testing scenarios. Core Technical Competencies (Mandatory) Sensor Proficiency: Demonstrated experience with various transducers (e.g., strain gauges, pressure transducers, LVDTs, thermocouples, or accelerometers). Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to build, "rig," and troubleshoot physical test setups. Data Integrity: High level of accuracy and attention to detail regarding signal quality and calibration. Communication: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to consult with a diverse population of students and researchers. IT Literacy: Proficiency with computer hardware, OS installation, and software-side troubleshooting. Specialized Training (Provided if necessary) LabVIEW and various other DAQ software. Crane and Forklift operation. Basic Machine Tool operations (Lathe, Mill, Saws, Sheet Metal) and Woodworking. Additional Skills Considered An Asset Proficiency in CAD software for designing custom test fixtures. Experience with TIG, MIG, and Stick welding, as well as plasma and oxy-acetylene cutting.
