Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Work a minimum of twelve (12) hours in any given day
Work outside in all weather conditions and on occasion at elevated heights
Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety and operations
Review instructions from Operations Supervisor and discuss with conductor and train crew
Inspect all railcars
Receive and transmit information by 2-way radio and telephone
Read and understand bulletins, work orders, and switch lists
Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses
Work with train crew to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars
Maintain situational awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety
Comprehend color and/or hand signals and systems.
Physical Requirements
Walk long distances over uneven terrain and ballast
Climb ladder to get on and off locomotive engine and or rail equipment
Ability to lift, push, pull, climb, sit, and stand
Identify and distinguish colors and hear warning signals
17-19 kgs (37 to 41 lbs) of force to lift switch lever up
18-27 kgs (40 to 60 lbs) of force to pull switch over
17-19 kgs (37 to 41 lbs) of force to lock switch lever back in place
Heavy work, lifting up to 80 pounds occasionally and carrying for 200 feet
Hand/eye coordination for passing receiving hand signals
Stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb on an occasional basis
Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity
Good strength and endurance are required in the arms, shoulders and upper back. For example: performing track switching duties requires:
A good sense of balance is required as these tasks are performed outdoors where terrain may be uneven and slippery, from product, wet, icy or snow covered.
Basic Qualifications & Requirements
High school diploma or GED
CROR Rules Qualified
First Aid level 1 certification
BC Class 5 Drivers license or equivalent
Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
Minimum 2 years conductor experience within Canada
Certified Locomotive Engineer
Certified on the application of Distributed Power Locomotives
Demonstrated ability to trouble shoot locomotive comm loss, as well as mechanical and system failures
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to re-sequence locomotives
Strong understanding and comprehension of gauge readings in a locomotive
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with peers, customers, and railway supervisors
Ability to read and interpret documents such as the Canadian Railway Operating Rules, General Track Bulletin, TGBO, Daily Operating Bulletins.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience operating unit trains, such as coal trains
Proficient computer skills such as Microsoft Office Suite.
